No, this is not a joke. Apparently, Swiss scientists have discovered a disorder linked directly to gaming too long with a PlayStation controller.

Well, every hobby has its hazards. I've gotten blisters from hours of Tekken, but this is a little ridiculous -- or is it? YOU DECIDE. Wait'll you see what else they've pinned on video games... coughpsychologicalproblemscough.

Gamers beware: Keeping too tight a grip on the console and furiously pushing the buttons can cause a newly identified skin disorder marked by painful lumps on the palms, Swiss scientists said on Tuesday.

Called "PlayStation palmar hidradentitis" by the scientists, the skin disorder can cause painful lesions on the palms similar to patches found on the soles of children's feet after taking part in heavy physical activity, they said.

I can imagine the same thing would happen with any controller.

Xbox palmar hidradentitis and Wii palmar hidradentitis should be synonymous, if you think about it.

Maybe Xbox, but if you play the Wii like one of those people on the ads swinging like an idiot, you get a little bit of arm pain action going to the next day.

      I speak from experience.

Who doesn't grip their controller tightly, well if I do see signs of it, I'll take a break for a while like the girl did on the article.

I've played a game on PS2 for roughly 24 hours straight and nothing happened to me.

I'd imagine the condition appears after numerous long sessions, not just one.

Anyway, I've got normal hands inspite of being a gamer for 9-10 yrs, so I think my current playing time is cool.

Because of reasons I will not discuss, I play games almost all day every day and nothing happens to my hands.I must literally play games 8 hours every day.

. . . . I feel sorry for you then! Man . . . even if you got paid for doing it (as your job), I honestly wouldn't want that. It'd be an eyesore, and boring to me!

I saw this posted on Yahoo's main page and I had a good laugh. I've been a gamer my whole life and not once ever had a skin problem on my hands, or blisters from gaming. I don't hold my controllers all that tight though, there's really no need to.

So they described it occurring in one child female (I'm not sure if I should be sexist or ageist, hurhur) and suddenly it's this "disorder" that we should all be very wary of?

Well thank you, Swiss scientists, but after 13 years and several hours of sleep traded in for gaming, I think I'm going to be all right. I appreciate the concern, really, but please, PLEASE, go back to eradicating AIDS and curing cancer and whatever significantly more relevant medical-type things there are.

Its hilarious. Like Shuyu said all because on girl gets this 'disorder' we all need to be careful playing games.

If you look into it its actually caused by excessive sweat on the skin, maybe she was just a dirty sweaty person who didnt wash and thats why she got this 'disorder'.

I have been a gamer for aslong as i can remember and i have never had this problem. Although i have recieved some bad cramps before but that was down to the dastardly DS being too small for my hands lol.

I get cramps playing the PSP pretty bad. I had to buy an attachment that turns it into a PS2 controller looking thing. LMAO

Nothing wrong on my end! My hands are perfectly fine, thank you very much. I do get fatigued on rare occasions, but other than that, nothing!

lol happens to one person and suddenly it's an epidemic

Although they said the same thing when the first playstation was out. An 11 year old got white knuckles from gripping the controller too tightly after a long gaming period, straight away everyone blamed the gaming industry yet it was only several weeks later that they found out he had a rare bone disease that wasn't caused by gaming.

However I've pushed buttons as hard as I would punch someone in the nose before and for many hours on end as well as gripped controllers tightly, I've also used a PC for a long period of time and still not suffered from RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) then again once my wrists begin to ache, I do take a break.

The fact, they have stated the study involved one person...that proves nothing unless they undergone a medical examination. Fact is, yes the gaming could have irritated the lesions but no one can prove that they caused it.

Though I love the fact they say the girl played several hours a day. At 12 I pretty much played as much as I do now yet no lesions or palm related problems.

Load of bollocks if you ask me and some more ammo to give Jack Thompson ¬_¬

    Yeah, and masturbation causes blindness.

If any of this meant anything, then I would be blind with lumpy hands.

I've been waiting for the masturbation joke, but I thought it would have to do with the hand callouses LMFAO

        you mean hairy palms?

Wow would hate to see a chronic masturbating gaming addict...though you would spot them a mile away...blind with hairy, lumpy palms...ewww

You know, I doubt a chronic masturbater would be very deterred by blindness. He can still find it, no problem.

Strange. I broke this story before and barely anyone commented. Does mentioning the name of the disorder attract views or something?

Yeah. If you say 'Sores bought on my gaming' then people will think 'meh', but call it a gaming disorder and mention the name then it appears more interesting so more people will look at it.

I like the fact that you will prob get the same soars and blisters from playing a guitar (anyone who plays a bass with there fingers and not a pik will agree) or lifting weights or riding a bike on a regular basis without gloves yet no one moans about that, just another anti gaming thing for parents and game haters to use.

Indeed, it is the same with many reptitive activities, you do it enough times day in and day out without caring for your hands then you better believe you will gain problems with them.

I unpack products from boxes for a living and my hand suffer from many cuts, grazes and dry skin. When I did weight lifting without gloves I would get blisters and hard skin just under where your palm meets the base of your fingers. I knew the cause of this and I solved it by buying weightlifting gloves and by applying moisturiser/E45 cream to my hands after a hard days work

Man ever hear of playing games in moderation? Play only 1 game for a few hours then take a break from it. In other words I don't belive in getting sores and the like unless I have a hang nail or cuts on my hands.
