OXCGN had the very distinct pleasure of being the only gaming media member/s to be selectively invited to the Aussie Xbox Sounds event.

Xbox Sounds are a unique Australian music gigs promoted and run by Microsoft Xbox-Div Australia and spread around various Australia iconic locations. This time it was on board the HMAS Tobruk in the Australian Navel Yards at Wooloomoloo (yes, that is a word).

Slip over to the site and check out OXCGN writer Aaron Bertinetti's description of the days events, in the blistering heat mind you, not your usual time for a rock gig.

OXCGN had the pleasure last weekend of attending yet another Microsoft event tangentally related to games. Last time it was razor blades, video games, cheerleaders and Yager bombs. This time it was Fall Out Boy, video games, the Navy and… sunburn! A week later I still have the sunburn but sadly no hangover…

Unfortunately this was a 15+ event and unlike the OFLC, Microsoft doesn’t seem to believe in providing adult products to minors.

For those unfamiliar with Xbox Sounds in a nutshell it’s a series of exclusive concerts put together by Microsoft Australia, in wholly unique locales, to promote the Xbox 360 as the cool console for the music lover who just might pick up Guitar Hero: World Tour or Lips.

See, Sony needs to be doing this. If Sony would just get out and sponsor things and get involved, maybe they wouldn't always be regarded so lowly. I never hear of people having PS3 game competitions, or anything sponsored by PS3. It's always a 360 competition or things like this. This is why MS has so much more money than everyone else.

Eh, dude, They've been doing promos and events for years, mainly with ESPN sports and things like that.

I have seen no such thing (not that I deny it). Besides, as far as I've seen, it's been just Sony as a whole that does promos, not the PS3 specifically.

They promoted the Playstation brand, of course. I think a lot of it had something to do with a PS van that they had where people could go in and play whatever PS3 games they had. I don't have all the details but it was something around that concept.

I don't know if they do that anymore. I think they might have done it once during 2007, but I haven't heard nor seen of it happening at all afterwards.

They really ought to get involved in a lot more; it'd give the PS3 a bit of a better rep, and Sony could get some money off of sponsoring and being involved.

In support of Red, I have to say that being 'involved' with this side of things, you do see the huge difference between MS and Sony in this area. Sony is WAY way behind in the public gaming arena in this regard.

As an example, the week before we were at the BIGGEST Sony gaming event for its MAJOR AAA title Launch . . .

It was at Fox Studios in Sydney . .but

It used a small small studio, had a total of 22 ppl there, no fan far, no media push, no nothing. It barely raised a sweat on the palms of the sony fans that were there., all 22 of them. This was an event that Sony brought out two of the developers and producers of Killzone 2 just for the event all the way from Europe . for 22 ppl . .

And yes, there were two events on the day, one by GameSpot and one by IGN, but in total, perhaps 100 ppl (prob around 70 actually) got to have a hands-on and speak with the developers. BTW< we were the ONLY Xbox site or media there, strangely enough, we were invited to further Sony gaming events, so we'll be reporting on those when they happen.

If that was MS, they would have had TV's there and all manner of things.

God, OXCGN will be involved with the Forza 3 launch here in Australia, and they have been planning that since late last year, and we've already been introduced to a huge car show group here in Australia that will be having car shows and events across Australia pushing the game and getting every car nut involved in the game.

That IS publicity, not the half baked efforts Sony or even Niffty put into things.

BUT, having said that, MS doe need to learn a lot of things when it comes to music and games .. but that's fodder for another story.

My point was that they did some kind of events. Nothing other than that. Do they need to work on stuff like that? Apparently so, but that's not what I was talking about though.

I think the point is, that Sony need to pushing their game side of things to the general public, not just the sports orientated. Whenever a game is released, they need to make it PUBLIC and in your face through subliminat advertizing. MS do that well. They help other 3rd party publishers do it as well. With huge billboards, bus ads, signage everywhere and in-store or in-shopping center promotional events.

SOny do nothing like that at all. They rely on their "good name" to carry them, yet that good name is beginning to wear thing in the newer generations especially with the buying public that did not grow up with the playstation attached to their hip like a siamese twin.

Not sure what you are actually talking about then, as that's what I call promotions . .what about you. ?

DO you know how much $$ and EFFORT MS put into Forza 2, and will be putting into Forza 3 just so it is in everyone's face, on every channel and every social network come release . . HEAPS.

MS funded and oprganized a complete racing series where they hired expert racders andcrew, got several media and racing personalities and toured the US on the tracks that appeared in the game. They filmed it, allowed the different teams to race real cars, the same that were to appear in thegame. Allowed them to then upgrade the vehilces and tune tham as you could in the game, and then go to the next track etc etc etc.

That cost a BUCKET load to pay for. Pantec's carrying all the cars, crew. Accomadation, Supplies, Vehicle repairs, equipment and the list goes on. All that months before the game was even launched. That is promotion .. . I've yet to see Sony or Nifty do anything like that in order to get their product out into the general population and into everyones conversation.

          Again, I don't think you're getting it.

My point was that they HAVE done these kind of things in the past, not whether they've done good or bad. Really, I don't know what you are reading in my comments but it has NOTHING to do with that. I mean, *bleep* if they need to work on it, then ok...having trouble understanding here because you're picking at straws for no reason.

Kinda like how Sony said they would be pushing KZ2's advertising campaign hard so it would sell, and I saw the commercial a grand total of one time during the two week window. ONCE. MS on the other hand, has their Star Ocean 4 commercial on every channel almost every ten minutes.

This is why I think Sony needs to severely step up their advertising. Because if their KZ2 ad campaign was their best, I pity Sony so dearly.
