You know a company is milking a brand when they plan on something like this. Currently its mostly a rumor, but some of these games have been confirmed. The current list so far is:
1. Guitar Hero: Metallica (confirmed for March 29, 2009 on the PS3, 360 and PC)
2. Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits (confirmed for June on the PS3, 360 and PC)
3. Guitar Hero: Modern Hits (confirmed on the DS)
4. Hard Rock Van Halen (rumored to be coming in August)
5. Guitar Hero 5 (not the final title, we imagine--September release rumored.)
6. DJ Hero (rumored October release)
7. Band Hero (rumored November release)
8. Another as-yet-untitled DS music game

Activision plans to expand the Guitar Hero range several more times before the end of the year according to a source close to the publisher.

Eurogamer has been told that Hard Rock Van Halen (August), Guitar Hero 5 (presumably a working title - September), DJ Hero (October), and Band Hero (November) are among games planned for release on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PS2 in 2009.

Following the release of Guitar Hero: Modern Hits, Activision also plans to release at least one more DS Guitar Hero title in 2009, the same source said.

And this is when Guitar Hero sucks.

Yea I think I will stick with Rock Band. Something to be said about a company that decides to focus on DLC rather than releasing a bunch of niche titles. For instance if Harmonix were going to do Metallica, Van Halen, Greatest Hits, and Modern Hits they would do them all as DLC packs. Ultimately you might end up paying the same $200 for all the songs but you get to play them all on the same disk. And Harmonix will likely make them compatible with RB3 when that releases. All in all I like Harmonix business plan better.

You see the light, Koloth. That makes two of us.

I agree, Activision is milking this franchise dry before we can even pucker up and go "Ahhh". The whole buying different discs with 45+ songs on them kinda threw me off after GHIII. I really like how Harmonix has planned it all out. The DLC is a huge hit, the on-disc add-ons can be downloaded themelves, and really the only band-only game they've done was for AC/DC, but thats only because theire stingey. And with all of this, they've even said they're taking their time with RB3, mainly to focus on the Beatles game, but also to make the next title a quality title with quality songs. GH's DLC is kinda lame and unpredictable. When they say "Queen", you think hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Another One Bites The Dust", "Killer Queen". Instead you get "We Are The Champions", "Fat Bottomed Girls", and "C-lebrity"...wtf?!

Guitar Hero is turning into the next Tony Hawk. Wait, not even Tony Hawk games came out this frequently.

Anyways, Harmonix is putting out the Beatles game later this year. I love them just for that, let alone the 500+ downloadable songs.

It's like the new Need for Speed. Or not even that. It's the new sports game series that releases five cloned games in a year.

          BlackLabel Mar 8, 09
Yeah to be fair Need for Speed has never been that bad. If anything this year is the first year it's releasing more than one. Need for Speed: Shift (Driving Simulator), Need for Speed: Nitro (Arcade) and Need for Speed World Online. Until now EA has only ever released one per year so it was good that you changed to sports games instead.

To be fair to Activision "We are the Champions" and "Fat Bottom Girls" are considered some of Queens best songs. And if I were going to put together a 5 pack then that would be it. Everything you mentioned except C-lebrity. Although "Who Wants to Live Forever" and "Princes of the Universe" would be high on my list too.

But why do just "We Are The Champions"? Why not put "We Will Rock You" with that and call it one song? The radio stations all play them together, they're played together on any Queen compilation. I was more surprised than anything that they weren't together.

And I like "Fat Bottomed Girls" but its not one of my favorites. Just a personal preference.

Because technically they are two seperate songs. They just flow into each other really well.

      Shinobi_razor Mar 7, 09
      agreed. quality over quantity.

im liking Rock Band more and more, because of the AC/DC pack, and now, coming in fall, the Beatles add on/separate game for RB!! there will for sure be some way to transfer Beatles songs into RB2, which is just awesome. and we can be sure that when RB3 comes out, we can easily switch over and keep all the songs from the first 2 games, which makes for an even larger library of songs to choose from. way to go Harmonix!

Only game i'm maybe considering getting is the greatest hits, just caus i can play GH, GH2 and GH3 songs on the same disc.

But other than that i'm pretty goddamn happy with RB2 and its amazing DLC atm.

    Mister Brightside Mar 7, 09
Screw Guitar Hero. Everyone buy Rock Band!

Nah, I really don't see the need to buy any more Guitar Hero games. Unless they release an AC/DC pack, that is.

Band Hero? Wtf isn't that basically what they got now?
    • 0
      Shinobi_razor Mar 7, 09
it should be. unless they create a new instrument or 2, like what about a piano or something?
      • 0
        Red 9 Mar 7, 09
What would be the difference between a GH/RB piano and a real one?
        • 2
          iLLmatic Mar 7, 09
I don't think he meant literally "create" a new instrument.
        • 0
          Shinobi_razor Mar 9, 09
yeah, a Rock Band like piano, you know, like with 8 keys instead of a real piano's 88...

Maybe I missed something but I only see 1 new GH game on that list, some expansions, some new games (DJ Hero and Band Hero) and a couple DS titles.

There's no real difference between DLC and releasing a CD.
    • 3
      Koloth Mar 7, 09
There is a big difference between DLC and a new disk. All Rock Band DLC can be purchased seperately if you only want a few songs or as a pack if you want a set of certain songs. Releasing a disk like "Greatest hits" which is a completely seperate game from World tour not an expansion you have to pay the full game price for whatever 50 or so songs that Activision thinks are greatest hits. And on top of that unless activision changed their design model you can't put them on the HDD and play them in World tour. It is kind of nice when you make your own setlist in RB is have a decent list of songs to choose from. I have about 200 songs to pick from rather than 50.

Ah now this is one of the many reasons I don't like Guitar Hero
  • 1
    Jaw Knee Mar 7, 09
Please, Aerosmith and Metallica did not need their own Guitar Hero bands, because frankly, neither of them are THAT good. Guitar Hero is a good game, but it does not need that many releases in one year, because it is not THAT GOOD.

    So *bleep* Activision.
    • 1
      FinalFantasyFanaticc Mar 9, 09
Different people have different tastes i suppose.

I for one see both Aerosmith and Metallica as amazing bands that are very deserving of their own games.

        Capn Droid Mar 10, 09
They're both great bands, but come on. Do they really need a whole game based around nothing but them?
        • 0
          Shinobi_razor Apr 9, 09
no they dont. Beatles on the other hand, are MORE than worthy of their own game.

I'll be getting DJ Hero, depending on the tracklist. Finally a version of this game for me.

    MusiKon Mar 8, 09
Why couldn't Metallica just do a DLC pack for World Tour? Same for Greatest Hits? And wtf is Band Hero? So many things wrong with this.
  • 0
    Fury Mar 8, 09
It is kind of stupid how they're making them on separate disks, but it's better than nothing. You don't have to buy them if you don't want to.

They're obviously just trying to appeal to larger audiences. Not everyone is aware of DLC and all that, but if some random Metallica fan walks into a store and sees "Guitar Hero: Metallica", then there's a good chance he'll buy it. It's hard to promote DLC, but it's not hard to promote an entire new game.

Besides, you get more gamerscore lol.

I'm just happy they're coming out with a Van Halen one. I haven't bought a music/rhythm game since Guitar Hero 2, but I'll probably pick up GH: Metallica and the new Van Halen game (if it isn't just a rumour).

Lol DJ Hero? Hows that gonna work? And Band Hero lmfao.
    • 0
      Jaw Knee Mar 8, 09
It's going to work the same as Guitar Hero, the controller is just a huge record you get to spin with different colors. It's like a pie chart, basically.

Seriously, wtf is band hero? And then DJ hero? Can activision PLZ make it stop!?

I just looked up the tracks for greatest hits and I really like it. As soon as I Ran (from Rock the 80s) is announced, i'm saving up money.

      reaver11 Mar 9, 09
Just save your money and buy the original games for $10 used instead of a brand new copy for $60.
      • 0
        Atomic Mar 10, 09
Unfortunatly, GH: rock the 80's doesn't exist on Xbox 360. I wish there were $10 360 games and to get a brand new copy of any game is $100.

Who removed 'Guitar' hero from the title? Just because 2 of them were spin-offs?
    • 0
      Shinobi_razor Mar 9, 09
well, cause of the DJ Hero, which has nothing to do with guitars. most ppl know what is meant when talking about the Hero franchise.

    nflsmc Mar 9, 09
I really see no reason for you people to complain. As always, if you don't like the games, DON'T BY THEM. It's that simple. They aren't affecting you at all.

Oh, and as usual, I must point out the fortune that could be made with Guitar Hero: Weird Al.

Even though few of his songs feature guitars.
    • 0
      Koloth Mar 9, 09
No, once again I would prefer a Weird Al DLC pack. As much as I love Weird Al, Rush, and Queen I would be hesitant to buy a niche GH title even for bands I like.

And plenty of his songs feature guitars in fact the majority of them. He has a guitarist in his band for a reason you know. Smells Like Nirvana, Headline News, The Theme from Rocky XIII, I love Rocky Road, You Don't Love Me Anymore, Can't Watch this, Trigger Happy, all great songs for guitar. They would all be easy guitar, but if you're after Weird Al songs you're not really in it for the guitar so much as the lyrics. These would all be songs more for the vocals than the rest of the band because short of the new compositions you could get the same music from the originals.

haha a Weird Al pack would be amazing! everyone would fight over the mic cause they are fun to sing. i want to do White and Nerdy.

...Why would they make a Guitar Hero 5 before a Guitar hero 4? That makes no sense (World Tour =/= Guitar Hero 4).
    • 0
      Koloth Apr 7, 09
      World Tour 2 maybe?

Why exactly do you think WT isn't GH4?
    • 0
      Shinobi_razor Apr 9, 09
of course World Tour is GH4 why wouldnt it be? just cause it doesnt have the number 4 doesnt mean it isnt.
