Electronic Theatre reports on a new gaming delivery systme that jopes to rival the PLAYSTATION3 and Xbox360 when it arrives in the public domain next year.

Playcast is a complete gaming service solution for Cable and IPTV operators. The service brings next-generation IP owners to hundreds of millions of connected households, with the added benefit of established billing, customer care and support systems already in place via the cable operators themselves.

    From the original article:
    ------------
Imagine not needing an Xbox 360 or PS3 to play the latest high-end games
    ------------

Wait, those set-top boxes are going to be just as powerful as the PS3 / Xbox 360 ?
Are cable-companies really ready to invest that kind of money ?
And what will consumers have to pay for these kinds of hardware with services ?

And I'm very curious what kind of games there will be available, I'm not interested in another tetris, breakout or pacman, and I don't think that the big studios with great IP's are willing to develop for a new and not proven platform.

With Sony's PSN store / playTV and MicroSofts XBL / Netflix deal and growing content and services I doubt playcast will get some foot in the market.

I know you quoted the article there, but you obviously didn't read it closely enough - there is NO SET-TOP BOX or any other hardware besides the controller. All the visuals and audio are delievered as streaming media in the normal way, whilst user input is handled via phone lines, much like internet protocol.

I can see this as working and taking off . . . in the future. But not now, that's for sure.

And personally, I wouldn't like it. But I know hundreds of millions will like it if they do it right and even just bring it to a level comparable to the wii in graphics and games.

Don't PC users already have something like this via Steam? Of course you need a high end PC for most games, but never-the-less...
