Yup you heard correctly but before you jump in with question, allow me to explain what is exactly being offered here.
As we all know, Battlefield Heroes is a free to play game, this means there is no retail price and you can download and play with no hassle. However there are some optional services which you can pay for but unlike in MMO's that grant you to buy an uber weapon that smites anything for real life money, DICE are basically offering servers for those that want privacy, to play amongst friends and even those that want good old fashioned clan matches.
Ontop of this, real money also gains you Battle Funds, these allow you to buy unique clothing that regular players couldn't get due to not paying money, along with unique emotes as well.
In other words, to keep the game balanced, you won't be able to buy weapons with real money or at least not uber powerful ones.
So what's the deal with the servers? To explain further, DICE and EA have a trusted partner program and if you play multiplayer EA owned games such as the Battlefield series then you will know about renting ranked servers from trusted partners like I3D.net. I3D and several other companies are the backbone of the game servers within Battlefield Heroes. DICE and these partners shall provide the default and free servers, while you or friends can buy ranked servers to do as you wish.
The keys, what about the keys? Ramone, a rep for I3D has clarified (or at least for I3D customers) that any BFH servers preordered from them would gain their 16 keys pretty much within 12-24 hours of purchasing. Of course the servers won't be available until the actual release of the game but this does mean you and 15 friends get early access to the beta.
I would like to remind you all that this isn't mandatory and isn't needed to run or play BFH, all it means is that those that want competition or privacy with friends can do so at their own will and with their money since of course, all default servers are open to the public.
