The North American game hardware and software sales data for April 2007, compiled by market research firm NPD Group, highlight the continuing strength of Nintendo's flagship consoles. Nintendo's DS ruled the hardware roost last month, selling 471,000 consoles. Although the Wii has garnered a reputation for its shortages, the console still managed to take second place with 360,000 units sold.

Sony's PlayStation 3 didn't fare as well, finishing behind the Xbox 360 with 82,000 units sold compared to the 174,000 units for Microsoft's console. Even Nintendo's GameBoy Advance handheld was able to pull ahead of the PS3 by about 2,000 units. The PlayStation 2 still managed to be a force to be reckoned with compared to its next-gen big brother however, nabbing third place overall in April with sales of 194,000 units. The PlayStation Portable also managed to beat both the Xbox 360 and PS3 for fourth place with 183,000 consoles sold.

Nintendo also dominated the software sales for April, nabbing the top four spots on the North American chart. The top two games for April were clearly the new Pokemon titles for the DS; in case you were interested, Pokemon Diamond proved to be a better seller than its Pearl counterpart. Super Paper Mario took third place, while Wii Play (bundled with a Wiimote) had to settle for fourth. The Guitar Hero II bundles for the Xbox 360 and PS2 followed Nintendo's quartet, and the new Spider-Man 3 games rounded out the multi-platform pack.

No doubt this trend will continue when releases such as Super Smash Brothers Brawls releases, but until then there's not a lot of huge franchise hits coming to the Wii that I'm aware of. That'll leave room for the PS3, or maybe the Xbox360, to nab the top spots on the software charts.

Following progression of hardware sales, it's doubtful that the PS3 will catch up with the 360 until the end of 2008, and that's still guessing. Wii doesn't seem to be slowing down though, as I thought it would since everyone and their brother seems to have one now (both my brother and I do =P).

Nintendo does have a couple of big releases lined up for the next month or so, with Mario Party 8, Pokemon Battle Rev., and Mario Strikers Charged. While not exactly the cream of the crop, I can almost guaranty these three games will sell very well.

Well Strikers Charged being released in Europe will be huge as that's their first online game and they are crazy football fans over there. Pokemon Battle Rev is NA first online game and I'm sure people will pick it up to see how it fairs out. And isn't MP8 out in July? But definately the starting the of the summer is kind of strong for the Wii. Plus the DS if you count Diamond and Pearl to it's success.

This only goes to show that no matter how much the Sony fanboy's scream and gloat over the PS3's hardware superiority to other consoles of this generation, that they still can't provide the one thing that gamers are looking for...*gasp*...games!

Who cares how powerful the friggin' thing is if there is absolutely nothing to play? Don't bother listing the games the PS3 library holds. I know what they are and the yawn factor for all of them is extraordinary.

When Brawl comes out, I wouln't doubt the graph raises 200%. April sales of DS over 400000 is just awesome. Hope we see more of that this summer.

Well if Brawl and Corruption are released at around the same time, which is quite likely, then expect the sales to soar through the roof.
