Just a few days ago Sega has licensed the Unreal 3 Engine, which is the identical engine for Gears of War. Now considering that the Wii is less superior in graphics when compared with the Playstation 3 & Xbox 360, can a Wii actually handle games that use the Unreal 3 Engine? Also I quote from the article:

"Sega haven't actually ruled out the engine being used for Wii development"

So the Wii may have some hidden powers the developers have yet to uncover?

Oops, was that a bit sensationalist?

Games journalist in 'It's a slow Friday and I'm struggling for news' shocker.

Before you get excited, Gears of War or anything remotely like it coming to Wii is about as plausible as Phil Spector being innocent. However, this is interesting news nonetheless.

Sega have announced that they've licenced the mighty Unreal 3 Engine from Gears of War developer Epic Games, for use in some of their upcoming 'North American titles.'

'SEGA is pleased to arm our developers with the sophisticated tools contained in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3," commented the president and COO of SEGA of America, Simon Jeffery.'

I should add, before I get lynched, that Sega haven't actually ruled out the engine being used for Wii development - there's my back covered.

Whilst it's unlikely Wii would be able to handle the amount of polygons that the engine can toss around, it doesn't rule out some kind of watered down pansy version being utilised to make Wii games just that little bit more pretty.

That's fairly spurious, but you never know.

Yep, it's a slow day.

Not too particularly interesting. I highly doubt the Unreal3 engine can be used on the Wii at this time, but it's possible that it may happen in the distant future. Both the PS2 and Xbox have given us surprises in their performance capability toward the end of their life cycles, and I don't see any reason why the Wii won't be any different.

If I'm not mistaken, the biggest obsticle in the way of the Wii utilizing the U3E is that it is an engine designed for HD. I don't see why a toned-down version wouldn't work.

Honestly, the Wii is really confusing. Galaxy really surprised me, it looks beautiful, but why can't anybody else pull it off? I mean, other than perhaps Brothers in Arms: Double Time, Galaxy is leagues ahead of any third party game. Even Brawl is, and it isn't as beautiful as Galaxy.

Just a question, what exactly does this have to do with GoW on the Wii? I know it uses the Unreal 3 Engline, but is that all?

Eh, this game looks alright, but I've seen better. It should have a decent shot, though.

Gears of War I think was a very good game. And if there was a chance for it to be on the Wii but as a toned down game. I'd probably still buy it or even rent it to see if it's worth anything.

Did you only read the title? The article suggests nothing of the sort.

He said "If there was a chance". He is simply stating that if they were to use the Unreal Engine on a watered down Wii game, he would buy it. That is relevant to the article. "While it's unlikely Wii would be able to handle the amount of polygons that the engine can toss around, it doesn't rule out some kind of watered down pansy version being utilised to make Wii games just that little bit more pretty."

If Gears of War was to ever come out for the Wii then I doubt that it would have to be toned down that much. It is not as though we are dropping a whole console generation graphically.

Utilising the U3E would be too difficult as of now but definitely a possibility in the future.

Wow, this thread title is misleading.

At first I thought, "WTF !?!?!? Gears of War on the Wii ? Well I guess it would make chainsawing other players a lot more interesting."

If they are actually able to run games like Gears using the U3E, don't they need the ability to play online?

We all know that online gaming is the future. Hell, it's the present. No one wants to play the single player campaign all the time.
