Launching during Satoru Iwata's keynote during the 2009 GDC, Wii Firmware 4.0U is now available.

This firmware update brings the following:

  • SD Card Channel to the Wii, allowing for the launching of Wii Channels from the SD Card. To utilize this feature, enough free space must be available on the Wii's internal memory, which has to be greater than the size of the game that will be launched. Save data can only be run from the internal memory.
  • SDHC support
  • Move function - old firmware only had Copy and Erase for data management
  • Download directly to the SD Card from the Wii Shop Channel

WARNING DON'T UPDATE IF YOU RUN HOMEBREW.

Finally a storage fix, this is a much cheaper solution than having to buy a Nintendo brand hard drive that was rumored. I wonder how many games will it take to fill 32GB card.
Now I just have to wait a little bit for a hack to come out.

    Update
The firmware 4.0 firmware doesn't block homebrew from running, but the Twilight Hack no longer works so a new exploit is needed to hack a Wii.

    Quite nice idea.

And I never really understood Wii homebrew - just seems worthless.

I guess you haven't tried it, with the Homebrew Browser installed you can quickly download, update, and manage games, tools, emulators, media players, and DVD player all for free.
      Yes quite worthless indeed.

It seems like homebrew is the only thing I use my Wii for anymore.
