In a surprise move, Infinity Ward has confirmed that the November-bound sequel to the hugely successful shooter, Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, will be no longer bear the Call Of Duty name.

In addition to opting for the pruned title of Modern Warfare 2, the fan-favourite developer announced that it continue the franchise as a spin-off to the Call Of Duty series.

Treyarch, the team behind the fifth iteration in the series, Call Of Duty: World At War, will continue to work on the main Call Of Duty games.

"Everyone on the team is laser focused on making the most gripping experience we've ever created," said Infinity Ward's CEO, Vince Zampella. "No detail is too small and every finishing touch imaginable is underway to make Modern Warfare 2 our best ever. We can't wait for our fans around the world to play starting November 10th."

Hmmm seems like a good move, cut off from Call of duty before Treyarch kills the name.

Hardly. CoD3 and 5 are better than the vast majority of shooters.

Considering they have scores of 82 and 85 on metacritic, my view seems far from controversial.

Yeah I agree, Treyarch has been slowly and painfully killing Call of Duty for such a long time now. By IW severing themselves from CoD they can create their own game similar to it that people will respect.

Well, guys, I'm afraid with this move, we can finally let Call of Duty die. Now, we let IW finally take full control of their own game.

(To think, it's one of the best series' in gaming, and we want it to die because of one developer).

Hopefully Infinity Ward can create their own games from now on. I'll be looking forward to this game, but the name Call of Duty carries a lot of worldwide fans and all of that. I'll still play Call of Duty games, and Im sure Infinity Ward will help with other Call of Duty games in the future.

Call of Duty is my favorite FPS series...this sucks. -_- I'd rather not see Treyarch behind it full-time. Ah well, whatever IW heads up, I'll surely be checking it out, starting with Modern Warfare 2.

Well the thing is Infinity Ward was trying to get Activision to give Call of Duty exclusively to them. Part of the aggravation being them having to waste some of their manhours working with the Treyarch which comprises of junior developers in World at War while they could be putting all their efforts into their own game.

It's just a name though. Treyarch can have Call of Duty. I'll just get whatever Infinity comes up with.

I can understand some reasons to do it, but it'll just feel odd with it not being called Call of Duty now, seriously.

yo,you all wrong, becuse this name like "call of duty:modern warfare 2" like too long name, than infinity ward give short name"modern warfare 2".

I'm glad about it honestly. It basically means Treyarch gets all the WW2 stuff and IW gets to focus on the modern stuff. Not to mention their new IP, unless Modern Warfare counts as it.

I think people are missing the point a little here. Activision is still publishing both games, but they're giving IW some more freedom over the title. I think this will be a good move, and more consistency with each franchise will be helpful for gamers as a whole.

I guess IW didn't want their games to be associated with the crap that Treyarch spews out.

So will it just be called Modern Warfare from now on?

Seems kinda strange, but I'm willing to live with it as long as they keep bringing out quality games.

How much do you guys want to bet that Treyarch gets the old "Call of Duty" name and Infinity Ward gets something new like "Duty's Call" ?

I bet they're just going to stick with Modern Warfare 2.

Hate to say this, but "Duty's Call" sounds like someone is going off for a dump

Hey, I didn't say it would be a good idea for a new game.

Good, Now I can have good ww2 games from treyarch and good modern games from IW.

But remember they wont be competing with each other, so there not going to be releasing games at the same time.(for you ww2 haters out there)

You guy's give treyarch to much slack, its not like they made a crappy game, WAW was a great game. You just get pissy because its not "modern", prrf modern has been done plenty of times before, its not as if cod 4 was original.

Your comparable to fanboys, "wait a miunet dis aint IW, wtf is dis shit."

The only reason a lot of people are playing CoD:WaW is because they used the Infinity Ward's CoD4 engine. I bet if they made their own game using their own engine that less people would be playing. CoD4 is fun, and it will probably never cease to be fun to some people, but for others the guns, perks, etc, get boring and then you want more. Since WaW was using the same engine as CoD4 and Modern Warfare 2 wasn't confirmed, even though it was likely, they turned to World at War because it was essentially the same thing and was going to be released soon.

Or that's what I think happened with World at War.

Cod 5 uses a tweaked version of the Cod4 engine. And it took two years to develop, as Cod 4 came out the year before its not like they just took cod4 re-skinned it. Besides its the same game series, so it would be moronic to develop a whole new engine.

And who said anything about the amount of people playing it?

If you played it on veteran level, you wouldn't be saying how great the game is. It is poorly programmed and badly designed, nothing more then frustrating

I'll just say this right now, I haven't played CoD5. I've played every single other CoD bar WaW at the moment. So with that out of the way, let me just ask something. Isn't veteran MEANT to be frustrating? Last I checked, it's the highest difficulty.
