We all grew up being told by our parents not to sit too close to the TV, not to play games for too long in extended periods and that games where bad for our eyesight. Well recent studies show, at least this last claim, to be false. Fast paced games like First Person Shooters actually enhance vision according to the research.

SLAYING hordes of bad guys in fast-paced video games improves vision, a study has shown for the first time.

Far from being harmful to eyesight, as some had feared, action games provide excellent training for what eye doctors call contrast sensitivity, the study found.

Contrast sensitivity is the ability to notice tiny changes in shades of grey against a uniform background, and is critical to everyday activities such as night driving and reading. It often degrades with age.

The findings, published in Nature Neuroscience, reveal a previously unsuspected adaptability in the brain, and could open the way to new therapies, the researchers said.

”This is not a skill that people were supposed to get better at by training,” said Daphne Bavelier, a professor at the University of Rochester in New York state and the study's lead researcher.

”It was something that we corrected for at the level of the optics of the eye – to get better contrast detection you get glasses or laser surgery.”

It's not the point of the games themselves being bad for your eyesight; playing the games will improve your accuracy or puzzle skills, so-on so-forth. It's the point of not sitting in front of the television all day long, staring at the screen, that's what's harmful. Not only to your eyes but more importantly, to your mind man. Too limiting.

I think that is what video games have improved about my vision. As seeing clarity and what not, I think it has gotten worse as I had to get glasses.

      Yeah, Caro is right.

Its not the game that is damaging its the radiation from the screen.

Not even neccessarily radiation man; if you stare at anything for 12 hours a day, radioactive or not, whatever it is, it's not gonna do much good for you. It's about finding a healthy balance, between the enjoyment and those practical skills, and your health that's what's most important man.

The thing is, people don't often "stare" at TV, much less for 12 hours a day. Your eyes are constantly dilating and reacting to the changes in light levels.

However, ultra-high contrast situations and light being emitted directly into your eyes will damage them over time.

    I've known this since forever.

It's not a new thing, I heard it some years ago. But as for eyesights, it hasn't done something bad for now, as one eye did improve and the other loose some points. I don't know if it has a matter with video games.

While video games may improve such things as reaction time and other hand-eye skills, it is really quite harmful to your eyes if played for an extended amount of time. Your eyes perceive 3 dimensions on a two-dimensional screen, therefore its trying to focus on things that aren't really there (IE your eyes focus on something in the distance in-game, when it is really only a few feet ahead of you). Your eyes become tired from doing so, and you will have trouble focusing on things in real life.

I had to take a looooong break from gaming because I found my eyes were haing trouble focusing on things. Now I only game in 45 minute intervals with long breaks.

So no, gaming does not improve eyesight.

Well I can understand your feeling, it's happening sometimes to me.

I don't think games affect you in any way, helping or harming.

Yeah. About the only thing they really improve is hand-eye coordination, in my opinion.

Well, depending on how much you play, they could hurt your eyes.

I don't know about that though. In some ways, yeah hand-eye coordination is improved. Yet my hammering skills show otherwise! You remember mostly in the same way you learned. Therefore if you're practicing your "hand-eye coordination" through video games with a controller, then that increase in hand-eye coordination will really only show when you have some sort of controller in your hands, looking at a screen or window in front of you.

When I read this, I automatically thought about how everyone bags on articles that over-generalize and loosely relate gaming to something they say it negatively "affects" in real life. Yet when it's a positive thing, no one bags on it. . . **Sniff** I think I smell partiality!

Anywho, yeah if you focus on fast moving things and can see clearly, in short intervals, your eyes can indeed become better. Your muscles are working out basically.

HOWEVER, it can indeed harm your eyes too. Just like working out your other muscles, has a limit, so do your eyes. You can strain the muscles to a point that you damage them through overwork. That's also why watching movies too long, reading too long, and so forth for too long a time WILL hurt your eyes. Sitting too close for too long will also damage your eyes as your eyes will learn and the muscles will get used to being that close, loosing some focusing ability as well as ability to see at further distances (Sitting too far can do the same), just like ifyou only work out a particular muscle, or only work it out in just one position/movement. You'll get better equipped for that movement, but anything else . . . you'll get weaker.
