At the recent GDC 09, Capcom announced that the upcoming zombie title Dead Rising 2 will have a multiplayer option. They are also hoping to have as many as 6000 characters onscreen at one time.
Update: It looks like he Multiplayer rumor has just been debunked. Product Manager Laura Scholl "mistakenly referred to the game as multiplayer instead of multiplatform". That doesn't necessarily mean there won't be a multiplayer option. It just means tht Capcom haven't confirmed/denied it yet.
Discuss in the Dead Rising 2 forum
Mentioning a conversation that she'd had with Siddeek about the use of the program, she stated that Siddeek confirmed that Dead Rising 2 will frequently track at least 800 separate clothing textures to provide the sense of unique zombies onscreen. What's more, thanks to the elements that Blue Castle are using from mental mill to quickly mass produce characters for the game engine, players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplayer sessions.
*Update*: Apparently, the information regarding multiplayer was a mistake, according to a statement from Laura Scholl herself. Today, clarifying her comments from GDC, she specifically contacted IGN, stating, "In my 'During the Dead Rising 2' presentation at GDC this past Friday, while I was describing how Blue Castle is using mental mill technology in character development, I mistakenly referred to the game as multiplayer instead of multiplatform. I apologize for the confusion. The game is indeed multiplatform and Blue Castle has done an amazing job creating incredibly photorealistic characters -- from their skin tone to their clothing -- in heavily populated and complex levels throughout the game. Gamers are going to be thrilled with how the game feels, looks and plays." We contacted Capcom, but they had no comment regarding the new statement from Scholl or multiplayer for Dead Rising 2.

NO MULTIPLAYER!!!!!!
(Article updated at source.)
90006000!WHAT?
90006000!?! THERE'S NO WAY!Can't wait to see what the Multiplayer will bring as well =D
Just settle for hundreds, or maybe a thousand.
Even so though, you can't compare the gameplay of Dead Rising to Warhawk. Since Dead Rising had specific moves and abilities to deal with large crowds and warhawk was a basic shooter.
But I'm not really comparing the games. I'm merely saying they should perhaps take heed to what Insomniac has learned: There is such a thing as TOO much. Believe me, unless the 6,000 is spread over a good draw distance to make it not so crowded, people will be complaining about the game having too many enemies that it robs some of the fun.
I can see something wrong with this already, just because they can put a large amount of zombies in the game doesn't always mean they should.
I can just imagine the frame rate issues.
Capcom are basically the kings of Multiplat nowadays.
Anyway, carry on
Hey I'm not complaining, now all 3 users can enjoy this game....3rd one.....not so much......
But on the hypothetical of Multiplayer being assumed, I say this:
I hope by 'multiplayer' they really mean 'co-op'.
I'd have to see 6000 zombies on screen to believe it, seeing though it seemed as you were in a sea of zombies when there was only 800
Definately on the 'must pick up on release date' list.
And 6000!? Excited to see how that turns out...not that anyone is going to count them.
EDIT: Wait, so she actually wanted to say, "players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplatform sessions."? That doesn't make sense. I think they're just trying to keep multiplayer under wraps.
