At the recent GDC 09, Capcom announced that the upcoming zombie title Dead Rising 2 will have a multiplayer option. They are also hoping to have as many as 6000 characters onscreen at one time.

Update: It looks like he Multiplayer rumor has just been debunked. Product Manager Laura Scholl "mistakenly referred to the game as multiplayer instead of multiplatform". That doesn't necessarily mean there won't be a multiplayer option. It just means tht Capcom haven't confirmed/denied it yet.

Discuss in the Dead Rising 2 forum

Mentioning a conversation that she'd had with Siddeek about the use of the program, she stated that Siddeek confirmed that Dead Rising 2 will frequently track at least 800 separate clothing textures to provide the sense of unique zombies onscreen. What's more, thanks to the elements that Blue Castle are using from mental mill to quickly mass produce characters for the game engine, players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplayer sessions.

*Update*: Apparently, the information regarding multiplayer was a mistake, according to a statement from Laura Scholl herself. Today, clarifying her comments from GDC, she specifically contacted IGN, stating, "In my 'During the Dead Rising 2' presentation at GDC this past Friday, while I was describing how Blue Castle is using mental mill technology in character development, I mistakenly referred to the game as multiplayer instead of multiplatform. I apologize for the confusion. The game is indeed multiplatform and Blue Castle has done an amazing job creating incredibly photorealistic characters -- from their skin tone to their clothing -- in heavily populated and complex levels throughout the game. Gamers are going to be thrilled with how the game feels, looks and plays." We contacted Capcom, but they had no comment regarding the new statement from Scholl or multiplayer for Dead Rising 2.

They should probably take Incognito's advice, learning from their mistakes. When they were making Warhawk they wanted to put as many enemies on screen as possible with the PS3. They found out that wasn't the greatest idea because you ended up bumping into everyone and having little room to move about.

Just settle for hundreds, or maybe a thousand.

Yeah, but Warhawk sucked on it's own.

Maybe to you personally, but as far as the general public goes, Warhawk was VERY popular and sold a lot! It was the first game to actually have splitscreen online, and the game mechanics were VERY nice (still are). Graphics were not photorealistic but that's not what they aimed for, and graphically the lighting was much nicer than was seen in other games when it released.

Well I hated it under the premise that it was a free game, since it pretty much was for me.

Even so though, you can't compare the gameplay of Dead Rising to Warhawk. Since Dead Rising had specific moves and abilities to deal with large crowds and warhawk was a basic shooter.

Free? Not sure what you mean about that. You mean the demo of the game that came out quite a while after release?

But I'm not really comparing the games. I'm merely saying they should perhaps take heed to what Insomniac has learned: There is such a thing as TOO much. Believe me, unless the 6,000 is spread over a good draw distance to make it not so crowded, people will be complaining about the game having too many enemies that it robs some of the fun.

holy hell. thats really gonna put a strain on the 360, and probably the PS3 also. but multiplayer will be nice to have.

Anyone know anything about the playable character yet? His name or background. I see he likes jeans and a biker jacket. He looks pretty cool, hopefully he'll be as good as Frank.

    Holy crap 6000??

I can see something wrong with this already, just because they can put a large amount of zombies in the game doesn't always mean they should.

I can just imagine the frame rate issues.

Just a question. Why is this showing up in the PS3 news section? Or has it been confirmed for the PS3 and I've missed it?

Yeah Capcom confirmed it to be Multiplat a long time ago.

Capcom are basically the kings of Multiplat nowadays.

I must have mistaken this for Lost Planet 2.

        Anyway, carry on

    dwg14390 Mar 30, 09
They said that all games from now on will be multiplatform so there is no more exclusives coming from them.

Hey I'm not complaining, now all 3 users can enjoy this game....3rd one.....not so much......

    Aussie Legend Mar 30, 09
If you actually read down near the bottom, it says 'multiplatform' was mistaken for 'multiplayer'.

But on the hypothetical of Multiplayer being assumed, I say this:

I hope by 'multiplayer' they really mean 'co-op'.

I'd have to see 6000 zombies on screen to believe it, seeing though it seemed as you were in a sea of zombies when there was only 800

Definately on the 'must pick up on release date' list.

Takes me a little longer to get it going.

And 6000!? Excited to see how that turns out...not that anyone is going to count them.

Don't judge me for checking. I dared to find out how many licks it took to get to the center of a tootsie pop, so I'll dare to find out how many zombies are on-screen.

    DusktoDawn Mar 30, 09
It is possible to put 1000+ people on one screen?
    • 0
      Storm Mar 31, 09
That's doable for sure...but 6,000 is quite a number, would love to see them pull this off, so long as the frame rate doesn't go to hell.

        Shinobi_razor Mar 31, 09
im thinking probably along the lines of in Dawn of the Dead, when they go to the roof and look outside onto the parking lot area below they see thousands of zombies just standing there. itll probably be something like that. because unless they are all far away from you, its not really possible to fit that many on screen at once, at least within the confines of a mall like in the first game. they would have to be off in the distance a bit, then it would be possible.
        • 1
          HisServant77 Mar 31, 09
I'm thinking the same. Unless they have the zombies in a far distance with good draw distance, it'll be unfeasible. Possible, actually, but . . . who would want that many characters crowded into a 1,000 square yard area? That's six characters for every square yard!! Not much fun if you can't move much.

Awesome. I was disappointed when Dead Rising turned out to be a 360 exclusive, but now that this is coming to the PS3, AND its going to have an insane number of zombies, I'm all hyped up.

EDIT: Wait, so she actually wanted to say, "players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplatform sessions."? That doesn't make sense. I think they're just trying to keep multiplayer under wraps.

ah man!!! i was excited about having a multiplayer Dead Rising but it was confused for multiplatform. i sure hope it has a co-op. 4 player co-op would be AMAZING!
