Looks like Japan's introduced the 'Wii Expand' system which allows people to download updates for their current Nintendo Wii games, including a pretty violent and bloody expansion of Brawl titled Super Smash Bros. X : Extreme. Cool, huh? Glad Nintendo understood what the fans want for once!

On Wednesday afternoon in Kyoto, Japan, Nintendo Co. Ltd. allegedly held a private conference at the Rihga Royal Hotel, where company leaders spoke to third-party publishing partners about a new service in the works for Wii owners. Called 'Wii Expand,' the addition, which utilizes the recently-released Wii System Menu 4.0's new SD card compatibility, enables players to download game expansions, modifications and updates. Insiders who attended the exclusive event said that Wii Expand would launch globally later this year, but could not provide an exact date.

Given that Nintendo's console has lagged behind competitors with regard to downloadable content, we figured it was just a matter of time before a solution came along

Much more surprising is the demo the publisher showcased presumably as a proof of concept for the service: an ultra-violent update to its hit Wii fighter, now appropriately dubbed Super Smash Bros. Brawl X: Extreme. The moniker seems to be a play on the game's original Japanese name of Dairantou Smash Bros. X -- now, though, the 'X' is stained with blood. Insiders explained that via a content download through the Expand service, Wii owners would be able to save the expansion to SD card and could then choose to play the so-called 'Extreme' version of the game upon next booting Brawl.

This looks like a cheap gimmick. I would much rather see downloadable characters then blood.

You've got to be kidding me. Who wants new characters when we've already got like ... what .. 35 of them? Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but it is my personal opinion that the idea of adding blood is great. The game will appeal to a lot of different crowds.

If anyone believed this for even a second, I laugh at them for all eternity. IGN's April Fool's joke last year was much better. (The Zelda Movie Trailer, for those who don't remember)

I hope it's a joke, I'm sure it is. If not, well I don't like gore in games, especially unnecessary gore in games . . . like this one?

Lol, Mario's decapitation at the end was so funny. I wish Grand Theft Auto's citizens still bled like that.

this is the worst April fools joke ever. like Nintendo would ever have anything to do with adding blood into their games...

they could have at least tried something believable like new characters. Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog now a playable character! or something like that.

I didn't like this because it was a joke. I mean a gore upgrade to a game like that would make it so much fun, lets hope Nintendo actually make it happen lol.

If I take a game like E.T. on the Atari 2400, and put blood in it, does that make it more fun?

        BlackLabel Apr 5, 09
Yes. Thats probably what would have halted the game industry crash of the mid 80's... Oh and it was the Atari 2600, thought i'd get pedantic there.

That's not my point, by point is that blood and gore doesn't make a game more fun.

          For sane people at least.

the blood was so fake, too, it took 3 seconds for the blood to hit the ground
