PS3 Firmware 2.70 Officially Announced - Online Friend Sorting, Cross-Game Text Chat!

Firmware 2.70 for the PS3 was just announced on the official Playstation blog. This update sounds yummy. It doesn't include all the features we've been wanting, but it's still pretty crazy. I can't wait!!! Check the blog yourself to see the video & more info.

Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

    A fair few people will be jumping for joy at the cross game chat, me on the other hand...meh.I rarely play games online or chat so for me, not really an exciting update.

    I can forsee people disliking the cross-game text chat feature simply because it's text chat. It would be very annoying trying to get in and out of that every 5 seconds to message someone back...

    I'm glad they're working on better community features and such, but honestly? . . . This is just about the same as sending a regular message to people on your friends list in game. Only difference is you can have 16 total people chatting together. But . . . that's not much interest to me right now in game. I like the idea and would use it out of a game, but in game it's just ridiculously done IMO.

    Now, if you could have it set to have a translucent window in the lower left corner transposed onto the screen WHILE you play the game, which shows the chat AND lets you (via keyboard) message without going through the XMB . . . THEN we'd be talking a HUGE and downright awesome update.

      The party system is already annoying in-game as it is. Text chat is probably even more annoying, especially for those without USB/Wireless KB's.

      Hopefully though they'll do it later on. To me, this update is more of a "get your foot in the door" kind of update. It feels more like just the first step or something. I mean . . . they know we want organization and the organization of friends they gave us with this update isn't really anything at all--Just a "Hey look, we can allow you to organize friends!" To get us an idea, and hopefully it'll be tweaked and done better for future updates.

        Personally I find friend organizing a fairly pointless feature, as I'm usually only concerned with the ones immediately online.

        As for everything else, I'm sure voice chat is quite imminent; if they got cross-game text chat out this fast, I can imagine the other big features are going to be coming VERY soon. I don't know why some are so pissed; Sony didn't even hype the release at all.

    I also just noticed something that I believe was updated by 2.70. Notice how under Account Management on the XMB it displays a decent description, and I don't think that was ever there, of if it was there, it wasn't as long. This also happened with a few other icons.

    I don't know if this has been around before as I don't download much, but they now display roughly how long the download is going to take to finish and tweak it in real time.
