Playstation 3 sales are going downhill and it's behind in the console war. Will Sony fall in the same footseps as Sega and discontinue being in the hardware war? Even though this does actually seem very doubtful but it was doubtful for Sega also. Who would have thought Sega one of the major hardware & software gaming company's to leave the hardware war and continue creating only software?
Let us assume that Sony is out of the console business, the 10 points below is what's more likely to happen.
1. Ken Kuturagi takes up a role at Nintendo to lend his unique vision of interactive entertainment towards Nintendo’s future gaming products. The centerpiece of his vision will be called “Adam,” a processor that is so powerful that it can mimic the cognitive functions of the human brain. The GPU will be called “Eve.”
2. Insomniac Games is purchased by Microsoft and the resultant Xbox 360 version of Ratchet & Clank is a runaway success. Insomniac goes on to bring bigger and faster returns than Rare could’ve hoped.
3. Thanks to lower production costs, Sony rolls out a new line of low-cost Blu-Ray Disc players and decimates the HD-DVD market.
4. After months of negotiations, Microsoft releases a Blu-Ray add-on for Xbox 360.
5. Nintendo takes a 99 per cent share of the Japanese market. Microsoft officially gives up and flees the region.
6. Hironobu Sakaguchi abandons his Lost Odyssey project after being disillusioned by months of having to compete against Mass Effect for airtime. Nintendo snap him up for laughs.
7. Jack Thompson claims credit for the demise of PlayStation 3. The world guffaws.
8. Sony’s English studios return to their old name, Psygnosis. Their remake of Shadow of the Beast goes on to outsell Halo 3.
9. Sega buys Polyphony Digital and releases Gran Turismo as a complete game on a disc. Car nuts rejoice.
10. EA announces development of a new console.

Haha, that cracked me up.
Now no one take this seriously. If the PS3 was to become the next Dreamcast and Jackie actually claim credit it for it. I'd laugh so hard that I'd probably die.
But in all seriousness. It is still to early to actually determine if the PS3 will fail. PS3 has just had a slow start with not to many great games but as Storm said. Once the bigger titles start coming out. We'll remember why Sony was dominate for the past two generations but you can't forget about Nintendo or Microsoft. They could trick you to.
haha imagine that happening. They could be the first console to thrive solely off of first party exclusives. But of course, most of them would suck.
Regardless, the PS3 CANNOT be the Dreamcast. Even IF the PS3 "fails," it would have to be the Saturn first. Sega and the Dreamcast's demise was a result of the Saturn. I don't understand why people still forget that.
