In a move I like to call "Pulling a Scamco"... Capcom has decided to make you pay to access content on the disc you already paid for. Sad times when gamers seem not to care about this practice.

Load up yer muskets! Yesterday, Capcom finally released the long-awaited ( ::snickers:: ) RE5 Versus mode on the PSN and XBLA.

But wait! Judging from the itty-bitty file size of the newly-launched DLC, gamers are led to believe they’re merely buying an unlock code for the content, contrary to Capcom’s insistence that the content is a new feature separate from the package sold in stores.

I knew this the instant I saw the file size. And here they were going on about how much work and effort they were putting into producing it, when technically it was part of the game already.

    Epic Fail Capcom

Yeah I was a bit pissed off too. I thought it hadn't downloaded since it was so fast. I went back to try and download it again and saw it wasn't even 400kb. Wtf!?

Ugh, but what can you expect? Capcom seem to be more money hungry than the dudes at Activision...

Capcom is money whoring hardcore between this and Street Fighter IV. Honestly, they must be desperate. It's sad considering they work on some of my favorite franchises.

...why is everybody acting like they didn't see this coming? Have the past few years not said anything yet???

It really seems as though most companies do not do this. It has been Namco for the most part (or at least they do it with the bigger named titles), there has been other random games though.

I mean more like people being surprised that Capcom is actually doing this. If people have noticed their business tactics these past few years, they would've at least suspected something like this was gonna happen.

What other DLC have Capcom banked on in the last few years, though? All I see are this year's SFIV and RE5. They didn't do anything like this with DMC4, at least, not to my knowledge.

Not just DLC,more like other things. Like how they've milked the hell out of the Wii lately?

          Milked the Wii, how so?

RE4: Wii Edition? (Add Wiimote aiming)

          Dead Rising Wii?

Umbrella Chronicles / Darkside Chronicles? (lol @ on-rails)

REZero for Wii in Japan and possibly for other regions? (Add Wiimote aiming...I dunno how the *bleep*...)

I see...but fans did request RE4 for the Wii, it was one of the more popular games within the last-gens. That and Nintendo wanted more hardcore games which utilize their unique features.

Well Wii Edition would've been cool if it wasn't for the fact that they copy/pasted a game that was 2 years old (at the time) and only added the Wiimote aiming. And if on-rails is the best the unique controls the Wii can do, then I'm pretty worried.

Not sure why your comment is reported, Seeker, but . . .

I honestly see nothing wrong with a company putting out more games . . .?! It doesn't matter either if it's just a recycled old game (if it's brought to a decent price and not the price of current new games).

Perhaps a rabid Nintendo fanboy didn't like Seeker's post in some way. :/

The Wii has plenty of potential, but as far as shooters go, yeah I think on-rail works decent enough with it's controls. There are more innovative controls with games such as No More Heroes or MadWorld.

You don't buy Capcom games because they have DLC on the disc that you don't have to pay for? That's....odd.

      Oh well. Your loss.

      Storm Apr 12, 09
Haha...you have no idea what you're missing then. Regardless of the useless remakes and DLC coding, their games are top-notch. Hits such as MegaMan, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil are known around the world.

I must say, I called this...

Kinda annoys me how they do that... but they are a business afterall, they're all gonna try and milk as much money as they can out of their consumer base.

Arseholes. And as long as there are kids who want to download the content no matter what the cost, this isn't going to stop.

      Storm Apr 10, 09
That's exactly it. Things like costume packs for SFIV isn't really required, but Capcom are smart in a sense that they know people will buy them. They want the extra content, helps keep the game replayable. Same thing with RE5, we want MP. I mean, we can hate them for these tricks all we want, but fact of the matter is...they win. Capcom dish out great games, and bank on it even more with these bonuses.

Gah, stop whining and enjoy the game. The dlc is pretty cheap + they're a business, of course they're gonna milk what they make.

      BlackLabel Apr 10, 09
Is it cheap? Not really as it's on the disc, you have already bought it!! So everyone that buys this DLC are idiots as they have bought the game, already bought this content and they are buying it again... Wow i don't know whether to applaud Capcom as it's *bleep*ing genius, i just don't want to condone this practice just like i am against exclusive content through pre-ordering games.

    Sabre Apr 10, 09
What's the problem? The DLC is rubbish anyway.
    • 2
      BlackLabel Apr 10, 09
It's the principle basically. Sure the DLC may be really bad but one day a developer is going to come out with "DLC" that is amazing. Now you may say "good for gamers" but if they go the Capcom route, that content would have already been on the disc locked away. This could have been a whole extra map, 30 missions and two new radio stations to use GTA as an example that were on the disc and locked behind a code. This is content we as gamers have already bought and we have to theoretically buy it again just to download the key to unlock it. It's daylight robbery and some idiots are happy to go a long with it, maybe scientists are right maybe video games are making people more dumb.

PS. The closing statement was aimed at anyone planning on buying this, not at Sabre 220 or anyone else that is providing a counter argument with no intention of buying.

        Storm Apr 10, 09
True. In the end though, we decide how to spend our money. Capcom keeps these DLC cheap, which makes the content that much more intriguing, regardless of it being on the disc already or not. It's actually rather smart, though I don't like them for it, because people will buy.

          Mr Gray Apr 11, 09
Ah, but people aren't seeing other problems this cause, Storm. See - people are going to start feeling ripped off by DRM/Licensed content like this when they learn it's on the disc already. That bullshit about 'releasing it as soon as possible' is an outright lie. That's not how the industry has worked, it's been quite the opposite. Extra content was always staved off for an expansion pack, something with a bigger retail price than a simple mod. If not an expansion pack, then a sequel.

What this kind of thing does, is promote anti-modding in games, as the company can thus release this minute shit AND get away with charging the community for it (when the community would be able to release bigger and better material for free).

This also promotes the 'resting on laurels' that's been plaguing the gaming industy for close to 8 years now. (When top notch games are released as train wrecks when the capabilities were there - Pandemic, Konami, etc)

This also promotes the use of hacker devices like gameshark and such (only the more malevolent third party Chinese kind) to release for console - and these usually effect more than one game, and can be detrimental to the online community in return.

Hm, yes you're right, Mr Gray. Doesn't seem like Capcom's looking at this situation as a long-term effect, rather just an easy way to get more cash.
