In an interview with Bloomberg, Nintendo of America's marketing chief George Harrison forecasts North American Wii sales to hit 35 million units by 2011 or 2012. It's a clear sign that Nintendo is expecting the Wii to pull its weight for the forseeable future, despite the shortage debacle which otherwise surrounds the console in many launch territories. On this topic, Harrison again blames the Wii shortage on higher than expected demand.

Interestingly, Harrison also confirms that Nintendo is in no rush to "upgrade" the Wii's hardware anytime soon, particularly in the graphical prowess category. The name of the game for the Wii remains its bid to expand the gaming audience, so "future technology" is not a priority implementation.

"The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, an analyst with Mizuho Investors Securities Co. in Tokyo. "It's too early to decide whether the Wii will be the winner among game consoles."

"We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to," [Harrison] said. "So we're going to start work on future technology only when we believe it's necessary."

I'm sure I'll have one by then. Count me in.

I think that's quite a steep number though. I don't really believe that many will be owned in the U.S. alone. If they can achieve that though, more power to 'em.

I can see that happening, but of course they shouldn't be too sure about that number. The Wii may be selling well now, but who knows what could happen to its sales in the future.

That's a lot of Wii's. Are they still having supply shortages as well?

Finally some one from a gaming company says it! He is right about it.

And yea they are still having supply shortages but they are trying to change that.

That is one hell of a large number to aim for, best of luck to Nintendo. They'll truly need to break through all barriers to achieve that.

It's not that large of a number, I mean, the Gamecube sold about 23 million worldwide, and the Gamecube isn't even that popular.

Wait, it says 35 million in the U.S. alone? Oh, good luck with that Nintendo.

That sounds like a longshot, but it sounds cool. We got five years, so we can do it. The Wii is popular now, and so is the Gamecube; even though the GCN is six years older.

Almost 3,000,000 Wii's now is a good start. We might get some boosts in profit, so the goal seems possible.

I just wonder how much they expect worldwide since this is what they want in the U.S. Maybe they're expecting 100 million worldwide?
