April 21st marks the twentieth anniversary of the release of the original Game Boy, the device that popularized portable gaming. To celebrate this momentous milestone, Binge Gamer takes a look back at the history of handheld gaming and remembers all of the other portable systems that the Game Boy crushed on it's meteoric rise to the top of the portable mountain.

It seems that every video game device that is announced promises to “forever change the way you play games”. Sure, more often than not they’re blowing smoke up your backside, but every once in a while a game system comes along that actually does change the way you play.

On April 21st, 1989, the Nintendo Game Boy did just that.

If this is in two parts then it's a little worrying that the second part may be trying to cram too much into it when it comes. A lot happened between the Gameboy Colour to the current generation of the DS and PSP. =\

It was interesting to read upon the early competitors Nintendo had back then. It looked like Sega had potential to go places with their options too.

Sega Game Gear was the only other handheld I'm remembering from that time, which led me to think that Game Gear was an important console back then.

I've never owned a Game Gear, my cousin did, but I'm a GameBoy fangirl. I'm only missing the GB Pocket and the GBC. Well, now, count that I will not buy one of the new versions of the DS.

I remember doing a report on Gunpei Yokoi and all of his inventions (including the GB and GB Pocket, as well as the Virtual Boy that was overshadowed by the N64). Good to see him get a mention as he did a lot for handheld gaming.
