The 80GB Playstation 3 may just make it to the United States. Of course, 20 more gigabytes of space isn't really that big of a change. If it's more expensive than the 60GB PS3, which it probably will be, then it probably wouldn't do any better than the 60GB PS3.

TOKYO --
Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console will come with a beefed up 80-gigabyte hard-disk drive in South Korea, and that model is being considered for the U.S. and other markets, a company official said Wednesday.

The PlayStation 3, which competes against Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, now comes with a 60-gigabyte hard drive. A 20-gigabyte version, which has been discontinued in the United States, still sells in Japan and some other regions.

"Increasing capacity for models is one of the options," said Satoshi Fukuoka, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We make such decisions depending on the needs of the market, and every country is different."

The 80-gigabyte version will start selling June 16 in South Korea, where online games are enormously popular and broadband connections are more widespread, he said. Broadband can enhance some games, and players can also download features for games from the Internet.

No decision has been made on other markets, although the company is considering selling it in the U.S. and elsewhere, Fukuoka said.

I say it's pointless, but I bet some people will buy it and sell it on Ebay for 3 times the price or more---and someone's gonna buy it.

One hell of an expensive system, I bet. I think I'll sell it on Ebay and get around $2000 for it, then buy another system. Then I'll have extra cash. HAX

I honestly saw this coming, since the announcement that a 80GB was being made "exclusively" for Korea. I don't find much of a point to getting this, but if you just have to have everything, I guess this is for you.

Some people will probably buy it for themselves because they want more space. But I agree with Supernouva when some people may just buy them and sell them for more.

Where is the brillant idea in this ? The PS3 is already exspenive as it is, what's with the increase in price ? Seems to me like this won't play Sony's financial situation with the PS3 in the long run.

I didn't see anything about a price increase.

You guys seem to not get it. Of course i understand there motive. When the 80GB comes to the U.S. it will be somewhat the same price as the 60 now. However, This is a big opportunity for them to lessen the ps3 60GB by 200, which will increase sales big time, while ppl buying the more space one. Its genious. Think about it, The 20 was 100 cheaper. And that was 40 less GB space. I guess great minds think alike.

I would buy this but i don't only need 20 more gigs when i am not going to store anything on the PS3 anyways.Plus its already expensive so people wont buy it.

I don't see the point in this, seeing as how 20 gigs isn't that much of an improvement, and people can just buy an external HDD that can handle up to 200gigs.

If they sell it at $600, and drop the price of the 60GB SKU, I'd expect a sharp rise in sales.

I wouldn't. Sony would just be losing more money.

That's true. It'll hurt Sony in the long run. 20 GB more isn't that big a deal.

With more HD memory, there's a high chance that it will freeze more. Plus the price would raise, so badly.
