Some poor lady on FMyLife tells us since she got to name her daughter, her husband got to name their son.

Everyone say hello to Baby Kratos ...

Today, my husband and I were talking about names for our expectant child. I told him since I named our daughter he could name our son. He's decided on a name from 'God of War'. My son is going to be named after a make-believe cartoon character - Kratos. FML

This really is giving gamers a bad name. :/ Ah well, it's a unique name at that...can imagine how interesting school will be for that child.

    Teacher: Marlene?
    Marlene: Here.
    Teacher: Patrick?
    Patrick: Here.
    Teacher: Kratos?
    Kratos: I AM HERE!!

Why do parents do this to their children? Strange names like this only get more annoying for the child as they get older.

It's not too bad if no one knows where it comes from. Better than Sephiroth at least.

It's just an old Greek style name. It's the same as naming your kid any ethnic name. While the game link is obviously there it's not going to be as obvious to the kids generation as they will e playing new and better games when they are old enough to do so. At least the kids got a unique name and not something boring and generic.

      Fallen Royalty Apr 24, 09
Euphoric brings up a good point; the kids he grows up with won't connect it to the game because the franchise will be gone by then.

      pyramidreaper Apr 24, 09
Euphoric, you thought someone would think they (Sony) made up that name themselves?..

      quote
KRATOS (or Cratus) was the god or daimon of strength, might, power and sovereign rule. He and his siblings, Nike (Victory), Bia (Force) and Zelos (Rivalry), were the winged enforcers of Zeus, angel-like beings who stood in attendance of the heavenly throne.
      http://www.theoi.com/Daimon/Kratos.html
I'm sure you can search for more (if you already don't know that)..

yeah, that's all great but like you said it's still *bleep*ing obvious the father named him not after that one but the one from the game. and I highly doubt noone will remember it in say, 6 years. when I was 13 ten years ago I did know about Streets of Rage.

How is this any different than naming your kid after any other famous person? So Kratos is made of pixels, big whup-dee-do. Like Euphoric said, it's not like God of War is still going to be around once the boy's in school. Besides, maybe it'll be like in a movie. He's named for the Greek word for strength, so maybe he'll be uber strong when he's older.

Perhaps if she was more educated about video games and/or played God of War she'd be into it.

Kratos is a lot better name than some other game names he could have picked.

thank god he didnt pick Link, Sephiroth (or any FF name really), Marth, Master Chief or Solid Snake.

Yes, THANK GOD he did not call his kid Solid Snake.

Do people just name their children whatever, without any thought anymore? I remember it used to be that naming a child required some thought and consideration. The meaning of names was considered highly, as they would be calling their children that meaning all their lives (as would everyone else), and considers it to be like a . . . destiny thing to some.

Now though it seems like it's just one of those jokes people do. Poor kid. Poor future kids too.

To me it always seem that back then they were just named after their grandfather or whatever. Or maybe that's just becuase I'm Greek.

After all, it's just a name, after you say it 5,000 times it won't matter.
      • 1
        HisServant77* Apr 25, 09
Yeah that might have a lot to do with you being Greek. Though of course some families still do that (I personally would have been a Henry V if my father was allowed to name me, because he wanted to continue a family name). But that part has a lot to do with continuing a legacy type of thinking. Just like many/most men see their kids as their mark on the world, a way to keep living and leaving something behind after they die, etc.

But even after hearing your name 5,000 times it does still matter a little. If not to you, to others it still might. It's kinda like naming your kid "Stupid." You call the kid stupid enough and after some time that kid has some issues, even if the kid got so used to it that it doesn't bother him/her.

I'm a bit in agreement with TT down there in that, if someone names their child a name (famous or not) because they like the meaning, then go for it. But to name a child just because of a character's name, or "to be different" or to be funny or something . . . that's ridiculous (to put it nicely).

Kratos is a pretty damn powerful name if you ask me.....and I'm speaking beside the game of course.

My daughter's name is Kairi (Kingdom Hearts) so he's not the only one to pull inspiration from video games. And no it wasn't me who named her, it was my non gaming ex wife who decided on that name and we both agreed it was beautiful. I can tell you right now it fits her, and I'd be scared of any dude named Kratos!! LMAO

I'd LOL. Of course by then who knows if the kids would even know what Kingdom Hearts is....LMAO I will try my best to pass on my video game nerdiness!! I have 2 keyblade inspired tats on my arms too, so I'm sure at least my daughters will knows what KH is.

While Kratos is the name of the protagonist of God of War, it's still a real legitimate name. Kratos means 'Strength' in Greek.

There are a lot of funky names out there that are by far worse than Kratos. imo Kratos is a cool name.

    Bad names include;
    Nicolas Cage's son Kal-el Coppola
    Shannyn Sossamon's son Audio Science
    Jason Lee's son Pilot Inspektor
    • 0
      Shinobi_razor Apr 24, 09
being named after Superman would actually be pretty cool (although i would get rid of the hyphen so it would just be "Kalel"). but yeah, Audio and Pilot are not human names!

      Storm Apr 25, 09
Hm, yeah, it's not a bad name, but many would relate him to the game character, hell, that's who the father related him to. Audio...haha. And besides, I have a strange feeling that they aren't even Greek.

    tallteen86 Apr 25, 09
Yeah, Kratos is 1000x more reasonable than 'Sephiroth" at least. It, at least sounds like a proper name.

The problem is when parents give their kids names that are (or at least sound) made up....Or belonging to a different ethnic group...

Like, you know a Mexican named Jesus, and you're like "Hi man", but if it was a run of the mill Caucasian, you'd be like "WTF?"

@kik36 - Awwww, I kinda wanted to name any daughter I might have, Kairi, but now if I do it, it'll look like I'm copying you! /joking. I agree, it is a very nice name (And I'm serious about using the name, it is one I'd strongly consider). Kairi sounds like a reasonable enough name to use, even if the child isn't Japanese.

Naming kids solely just because it is a game characters name, without regard to practicality (re: Kid named Sephiroth will almost certainly be bullied) is the only issue I take, really.

BTW: There are all sorts of insane/stupid/insulting names people give their kids. Swear words, words that relate to refuse, non-proper nouns (Remember that celeb's daughter named Apple?), etc.

Of course, a lot of names actually originate from common things, and things that aren't really name related you'd think. Example, the Japanese name "Sakura" means "Cherry Blossom(s)"...

Speaking of which, have you heard of the mother who named her child "Adolf Hitler" in a attenpt ot get people to understant that it's just a name? Some people are weird.

This kid might have a rough time with his name growing up, or he could go by another name, which would be something I would do.

The dad is a douchebag anyway, and should take credit for all the crap the kid receives.
