According to these guys, the Wii's best weapon is its simplicity. So in this hard battle of new generation chips, incredible graphics, and everything, the Wii is most likely to win. As you know, the controller isn't complicated to use, and all ages appear to really easily take to the console.

Wii is going to beat the competition because powerful chips and graphics have yet to motivate PS3 and Xbox 360 sales, according to Nintendo Of America's George Harrison. Fun trumps all.

"We’re starting to see in the performance of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that that’s not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to," he explained in an interview with Bloomberg. "So we’re going to start work on future technology only when we believe it’s necessary."

Harrison went on to say that Nintendo will reach its goal of selling 35 million Wii units by 2011 or 2012. The company is boosting production in China in order to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the next-gen console.

"Demand is much greater than we anticipated," he said. "A year ago no one thought we would be in this position."

Is there anything more inspiring than a comeback story?

Well of course, a Nintendo spokesman will tell you why their system is better.

But I tend to agree, I love complicated or techie toys but the mass market prefers simplicity and ease-of-use. If I have to explain for 15 minutes how to play a game, people lose interest. "So what does the X button do again??" If I say put this controller on, point it at the tv and move your hand people can do that.

Simple isnt always the best way. Its what the people want in the end. And millions of gamers will tell ya extreme graphics and chips and such is the best for gamers. However, i hope nintendo enjoys selling this system to older adults Cause Hardcore gamers want graphics and etc not simplicity. If i wanted that i would play my sega or super nintendo for that. This is the new generation of games, and when ps3 and xbox360 get there expected games the wii will be shot in the heart and lose this war.

Err... The Wii is kicking the PS3, and is was released before the Wii. Also, the PS3's technology causes it freeze a lot, and it also has 7 KG of weight.

haha your an idiot, the ps3 does not freeze a lot, unless you have it poorly ventilated, then it will over heat, and the Ps3 was relesed what, 3 days before the Wii? What do you expect, the Ps3 is 2.4 Times as much as the Wii...Meaning you can get 2 Wii's and a nunchuck and game for the price of one Ps3 system...yet you expect the ps3 to have more sales? come on...learn things

I think the main problem with the Xbox360 and PS3 is that the graphical leap from current gen. to next gen. is not as noticeable as it has been in the past. The leap from the PS1 to PS2 and from N64 to GC is much more evident in the eyes of people than the leap between Xbox to Xbox360 and PS2 to PS3. These next gen. consoles have begun focusing on the details of game graphics, making everything smoother, bigger, and faster, but these details do not make a big an impression as other generation gaps.

In the end, the system wars will come down to which system has the best games, just like it always has. Graphic power has never been a good measure of a system's market success or failure, and I doubt this generation will be any different.

I agree with you on every point. Besides I'm not one that looks for the best graphics in games anyways. As long as a game has a good storyline that I can enjoy then I'll play the game. It could have the worse graphics but if the gameplay is great then as I said. I'm fine with it.

Also as I have said countless times now. People are predicting which system will win to early! The consoles haven't been out for to long except the 360 but if it's going to follow how the Gc/PS2/Xbox gen went. It should go on for another 6 years and we are only into a small chunk of that.

Simplicity? This must be talking about casual gamers, if it is, I totally understand. But even so, most games for 360 and PS3 don't take more than 10 minutes to get used to the controls (unless its something like Armored Core 4). Not to mention Wiimote/Nunchuk controls has its downsides, like the DBZ, MK: Armageddon games, either you do weird moves or the moves are limited because you cannot perform the more complicated features.

Either way, the Wii's controls could might as well prove to be a pain in the ass for Third Party games (it already is) so they really have to rely on themselves again now more than ever, not to mention that if a game is too over-simplified then it will lose its flare sooner than later.

As a hardcore gamer, I don't buy this. Btw, the PS3 doesn't freeze often, probably once a few weeks. (At least for me)

Yeah. All of the 'innovations' DO lose their spark after a little while. I dunno if the Wii is going to be as exciting is 3 years, while I see the 360 still kicking ass and taking names. Who knows what sony will be doing by then, them guys are unpredictable.

Like i said b4 i'll say it again, simplicity isnt what hardcore gamers like myself want. Its cool that wii is doing simlple stuff. But remember what the wii is directed towards, a certain party. As xbox and ps3 is directed towards hardcore gamers. So right now there winning, but remember the story of the tortoise and the hair, who won thats right the turtle and in this case its sony.

The whole point about the Wii is that it is directed towards everyone, and I don't understand how simplicity isn't what a hardcore gamer would want. When he says simplicity, he means the controller, not the games. Simplicity in the controls allows for a better gaming experience, which I assume, is what a "hardcore" gamer would want.

    bbb7002004 May 26, 07
If you can play a Zelda game on Wii, then you can play anything with the Wiimote. Third parties just won't be able to pump out crap games to make a quick buck, which is only good for the industry. Developers will have to be, gasp, original when they make games.

Oh, and I suppose since you are "hardcore" you don't use a computer mouse, since it is designed to be a simple interface to the computer, replacing complex key based commands.

You're saying that...if you can play a simple fantasy game on the Wii...you can play anything?

Let's try GRAW 2, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4...If the Wii can actually even find a suitable configuration for Rainbow Six: Vegas alone, THEN it can PROBABLY handle anything. Personally, I see more limits than I see opportunities, which is why Nintendo's first party games are the only ones to really thrive off them.

The Wii is a better system than the PS3 when it comes to sales and fun factor. The PS3 is great, but it's extremely pricy. The Wii is a good amount of money, but every age group can play it. The Wii may be simple, but it uses controlls to make games complex and understandable. No doubt the Wii is beating the PS3.

    Deathman48 May 26, 07
I'm pretty sure, at least when compared to the PS3, that price is also a factor. Doesn't matter how incredibly awesome your technology is if people can't afford to actually buy it.

Yea and xbox is right up there. Listen You know why wii is selling so much, i will tell ya, its cause of money. Xbox and ps3 is pricy. Though ps3 is a little more, but xbox is 300+ Still alot. Wii is only selling cause ppl who arent hardcore gamers, "casual gamers" buy the damn thing. And the fact that its cheaper than helps too. But the controller has nothing to do with better experience. The wii is targeted to ppl who wants to get a work out, or older ppl who cant handle the extreme graphics of both ps3 and xbox. But the "casual gamers" who likes nintendo will get wii no matter what. But the problem with the wii is the graphics. While its simple and cute for some, it wont target all gamers. Add up all the sales of xbox and ps3 and it pwns and surpasses nintendo. So again simple isnt everything , and isnt what hardcore gamers want. And the games is like boring as hell. All those weak games its a shame. The real games are on xbox and ps3.

You couldn't be any more wrong. As a gamer, I'm probably at LEAST as hardcore as all of you combined, and I easily favor the Wii.
The Wii's games are every bit as "real" as PS3's and 360's. And overall, they're every bit as fun as well. The Wii's simplicity is alright, and other than the graphics department, simplicity cannot really be disadvantage. Not in Nintendo's case, at least.

I also think it's brand image and gimmick has a lot to do with it as well. Parents seem to be getting a bit more weary of video games these days with all the media hype. Buying something that's family friendly and also gets the kid up and about are two more pluses added to the price for parents.

Wow, so I suppose Manhunt 2, Resident Evil 4, No More Heros, Call of Duty Four, and others are all casual games or Nintendo first party efforts to push a terrible control scheme. It is not like aiming at the TV screen might actually be more fun and realistic than pushing an analog stick or something. What was I thinking. Man, replying to these posts is making me sound like a Nintendo Rep or something.

Anyway, please just try to think clearly for a moment. PS3 isn't selling well not only do to a high price, but also a lack of big name games. The only real game that comes to mind for the system is Resistance, which I have heard is not all that good, especially in comparison with other FPS like Gears of War. Once some AAA titles such as Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto hit the system, sells will pick up.

      Seeker X May 27, 07
I'm willing to bet that Manhunt 2 and Resident Evil 4 are going to be a lot more comfortable on the PS2 controller than on the Wiimote. Call of Duty 4 which is not only impossible to be on the Wii, but from reading the Previews, I'm pretty sure it's more than just running and shooting.

The PS3 is fine with titles, unless you have a 360 with you, with Resistance, Oblivion, MotorStorm, Sports games, and downloadable games (compare that with the first few months of the other consoles). Now if you don't have the money, then obviously you're not going to be able to enjoy the whole thing.

There's 2 things you need for every console now: An Internet connection and a credit card.

Actually Famitsu has graded the Wii version of Residen Evil, and has given it a 10,10,9. They said they prefer the Wii-mote, so maybe it's best not to assume things.
  • -1
    bbb7002004 May 27, 07
Most reviewers have said that the Wii build of Resident Evil 4 is the definitive version, with very good controls, actually. The same has also been said about Manhunt 2, although these opinions are based on eyes on as of now. Also, Madden games with now visuals slapped on don't really scream "Great Game!" to me.

    Seeker X May 27, 07
Why am I not surprised? RE4 is always "near perfect" in every console. I'd like to play it though, I'd like to see if the knife motion can actually aim while slashing. As for Manhunt 2, only time will tell.

It's easy to see what's going on though, Nintendo's attracting a load of casual players though party games and things like that, it's fine and all, but how long do you think it's gonna last? It's highlight is still Twilight Princess and that lost it's glow a long time ago, it's other serious games like Far Cry Vengeance and Red Steel REALLY aren't to par with today's games.

I still don't buy this "simplicity" thing. My guess is that the price is the main factor here, obviously a lot of people would choose the 360 or PS3 if they all had the same price.

One thing to remember is that a lot of big titles are coming out later in the year for all three systems. Wii is getting Metroid, Mario, and Smash, XBox360 Halo 3 and Too Human, and PS3 Final Fantasy 13 and others. Things will be much clearer in respect to the three consoles onces these come out.

    Rinkydink May 27, 07
I prefer the Wii, does that not make me a real gamer eh? The Wii won't be "falling as quick as a brick in mid air", you think the 360 and the PS3 are the only consoles to have great games coming out in the future? What about Metroid Corruption, Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy? That will greatly help with sales, and Nintendo won't be knocked down in the future just like that, I can assure you.

Finalblade, you do realize that third party developers make games for the system with the most market penetration, right? Why do you think so many games were exclusive to PS2 in the last few years of its life cycle? Not because it was the most powerful system, but because the number of PS2's sold were so much more than GC and Xbox combined, a lot of which were to kids and casual gamers playing the thousands of quick cash outs on PS2. Third party companies will develop games for the system that sells best, and right now, that is the Wii.

I should also mention, all of the big 3rd party development companies, Konami, Capcom, Rockstar, SquareEnix, Sega, etc., have revealed Wii projects in development. Wii is getting just as much, if not more support as the other consoles.

      Final Blade May 28, 07
Again that would make sense if only you knew what you was talking about. The ps2 didnt have so many games cause the ps2 was selling more. It was cause they liked sony more. The facts remain that sony still has Major exclusives coming out to over power that wii, here are some of the few; FF7 remake, God of war 3, FF13 and the other FF13 games, MGS4, NGS and here are some that will help the ps3 anyway. GTAIV, DMC4, and i believe they have more. And remember i never said that capcom or anoter 3rd party werent making games for the wii, i said the real games that makes a difference. The problem with the wii As i stated above is the graphics, And if they dont switch to HD then they wont even win.
  • 1
    Storm May 27, 07
The biggest problem with the Wii is that it's barely any different from the GameCube. I don't think it'll last many years, to be honest. Nintendo will probably release a new console within the next 3-4 years. Granted, many will take advantage of Brawl online, I sure as hell would, and this is Nintendo we're talking about (always been a fan) but because it's graphics don't compare to it's competition, I doubt the Wii will go five years without at least an upgrade.

I'm not saying that graphics are everything, but just think about what the 360 and PS3 games will look like over the next two years.
  • -1
    bbb7002004 May 28, 07
I'm not really sure how you can call that a Nintendo problem. Both the PS3 and Xbox360 are powered up versions of their current gen system. At least PS3 does have 6 axis, although I have yet to see any really good use of the technology, certainly no where near the use the Wii has gotten. If any systems are similar, they are Xbox and PS.

The Blue Flame May 28, 07
    Will the Wii last? No.

The reason it's selling so well is because people are so goddamn inquisitive about it. I myself really considered buying a Wii back in November, because I was just so curious about the whole motion sensing concept. What people don't realise is that the number of Wii owners who are already 'over' their Wii's is pretty high. Most people I know who have a Wii are already bored of it, and have gone back to playing their Xbox's and PS3's. if this continues, will the Wii last? Well, I don't think it will. With the poor game library & lack of third party titles, the Wii's sales should really slump in the next 12-16 months.
    • 0
      Vermillion May 28, 07
The libary don't sucks that much, I will admit ot does a bit. But wait until Nintendo's weapons are out. Brawl, for example, is going to be a great hit, and I bet it will be in the top 100 games a few months after it gets released.

Oh yea just like MS xbox waiting for there big weapon halo3. Please that is the worse garbage i have seen to date. The blue flame is right on the money. The wii will not last more than 4 years. X360 maybe 6 but ps3 will last longer. Unlike Nintendo sony has 7 big guns that i listen above that will doubled there sales. And true is they have more exclusives coming. The Wii is primitive to xbox and ps3, reason cause of the lack of a cd, dvd Drive according to some, and HD. And the fact that its a fad now makes this article non plausible. Its just like Hair style, clothes, shoes. Its a fad that will last for at most 1 year or so and "Nintendo falls as quick as a brick in mid air".

If the Wii will not last that much, the Xbox and PS3 will not do so . First off, you should be happy that Nintendo exists, without Nintendo, there would be no Playstation.
Nintendo and Sony were working in a multimedia thingy, but something went wrong, and Sony create its own videogames becasuse of that.

And im suppose to be happy with that, they were eventually going to make games regardless. Just like MS, they jumped on the bandwaggon in 2001 with the ps2 coming out. So again your flawed.

Just like the PSP would dominate the DS after a few years. Wait, lets see, the DS is murdering the PSP due to casuals and gamers enjoying the system.

Nintendo has gone back to basics with the Wii. They have gone back and reinvented the idea of a home console, just like they did 25 years ago with the NES.

The Wii is doing well because it is the cheapest of the bunch and the games are fun. As long as they make fun games that use the wiimote in a good way, the Wii should be fine. It might not sell as much as the PS3 or 360 in the long run, but it will still be good.

Graphics aren't everything and even so, they could improve them if they wanted for the Wii.
