A 200USD price cut! That's a lot, but I think PS3 sales would sharply increase because of it. A $200 price cut would make the 60GB Playstation 3 $80 cheaper than the Xbox 360 Elite. Of course, Microsoft may also have another price cut as well. Still, Sony has yet to make a decision.

Bank of America’s Michael L. Savner has said in a statement that Sony would have to take some extreme steps to recover from the mess they have created with Playstation 3 for themselves.

He said that the company would gain little even if they introduce a $100 price cut this Summer or Autumn.

He said in a statement to Gamedaily: “Despite growing anticipation that a $100 price cut for the PS3 is imminent this summer or early fall, we do not believe such a move would meaningfully improve stagnant PS3 sales and we are growing more concerned that a share shift away from Sony and Microsoft to Nintendo’s Wii platform is incrementally negative of all 3rd-party publishers.”

Savner further said: “Based on our analysis, we conclude that a $100 price cut for the PS3 would still leave the ‘all-in’ cost for a PS3 console and basic accouterments 20-25% higher than the comparable Xbox 360, and does not even reflect the possibility that Microsoft could also lower its hardware prices. Further, an important driver of Sony hardware last cycle was exclusive games, such as Grand Theft Auto. Unfortunately, Sony does not have a similar advantage this cycle. Halo 3, a highly anticipated game release this year is a Microsoft-published game only for the Xbox, and Grand Theft Auto IV, by Take-Two’s Rockstar unit, is being released on both the Sony and Xbox platforms.”

eventually, he suggests that Sony would have to cut the cost of the console by at least USD 200. But the possibilities of such a cut are minimal considering the company is already making huge losses on each console sold in the market.

Savner added: “Offsetting a potential price cut are decreasing production costs, which should improve significantly this year. We estimate that the loss per console could decline to about $50, assuming Sony does not cut its wholesale prices. Bottom line, we don’t expect Sony to make up meaningful ground against the Wii this year.”

I'm by no means saying that it will actually happen. But if it did get a 200 dollar cut, I'd be more apt to buy one...

If the price was cut by two hundred dollars, I can honestly say I would buy one faster than I can finish typing this sentence.

Ditto. I'm getting one sometime but not until they come down on that price. I can't justify 600 bucks right now.

Heck if they dropped the price by $200. There would be a bigger chance that I would buy the PS3 as well.

In sells, the price cut would boost it up tremendously. Sony might as well do the price cut, they would probably make the same amount of money they say they're making now, but with much more PS3 sells for their statistics.

Well i know its not confirmed but i have a strong feeling by mid summer or so sony will decrease it by $200. And obviously there not going to catch up with wii this year, but 08 marks FF13,GTA4, possibly dmc4 and god of war3. Those 4 games will most likely boost there sales even further. I have no doubt sony will cut it that big. When i get a feeling it normally plays out. Wish some luck on me guys maybe it will help lol.

The games you named will help boost the sales for the PS3 alot. But problem is GTA IV is probably the biggest one and it's being release on other systems as well so it may hurt sales but not alot. Not sure about the other three. But i definately agree they will boost sales.

Honestly, I don't think it will catch the Wii anytime soon, remember that the Wii may also have a litte decrease sooner or later.

A price drop of £100 would be awesome for me, at least(UK). I'm sure sales realy would go up with a big price drop.

This guy CLEARLY isn't a gamer, and doesn't know much about it. With Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Haze, FFXIII, MGS4 and Killzone coming out for the PS3 with limited or permant exclusivity, the PS3 will sell like hot cakes.

My no means am I saying a price cut wouldn't induce more sales, I'm just saying it most definitely isn't essential for units to sell.

Well, you can kinda tell since he's a banker or something along those lines, hence "Bank of America's...."

The PS3 could really use this alleged price cut. With the $200 taken off, the PS3 would be at the same price level as the Core and Preminum Xbox 360 bundles. And if they do this in time for the next big batch of new releases, the PS3 can make up for lost time.

Sony really do need a cut, and a massive $200 cut will greatly help with sales. Heck I would be tempted to get one then.

Wow, if PS3's went down to 400 bucks without losing any of the hardware inside I would be *bleep*ing amazed. That would make the 360 so overpriced in comparison.

The thing is, Sony simply cannot do it.

I'm not sure it would even be economically feasible for such an extreme price cut on Sony's part. The system is already selling under manufacture cost, cutting the price by $200 would be insane. A price cut is coming, but $200, I think not.

    Storm May 27, 07
I think at most, they'd drop it by $50 this year or next...and every year drop $50 off until it's $400 or something. A lesser price would bring more buys, but it'll hurt Sony even more.

Exactly, selling more consoles doesn't automatically mean more profitable. What really means winning the console wars, making the most profit or selling the most consoles? The latter you would think, but ultimately a company would see the former as the real win.
If they cut the price this much too soon it would destroy them.

Your reason is without a doubt illogical. The price of the system will go down Whether it will be 100 or 200 im not 100% sure. If sony price gets cut by 200 You can expect more sales, more money and a little help to them. Now If they decide to cut it by 100 lets say by the end of the summer. Than again b4 FF13 or MGS4 or GTA, Man you talk about a new hit on the market, just like Joshthegreat said they will sell like hot cakes.

At least. So now, if it gets the decrease, maybe I will get it.

I've never wanted to buy a PS3, because it costs way too much money. But if they lower the price by $200, then the chance of me buying it increases big time. $400 is still a little high, but I can't blame them for reducing the price by over 30%.

I'm surprised Sony ripped off gamers for this long anyway.

It's a gamble, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will detrimental if they drop the price. The whole theory behind selling something at below cost is that it generates more sales and through that actually makes the price per unit cheaper. There's two parts to cost, variable cost and fixed cost. Fixed costs are incurred no matter how much of a product is made (like the electricity or the price of the manufacturing facility). Variable costs are prices that are directly proportionate to the amount of production (like the cost of motherboards, Blu-ray drives, etc.). So if it's going to cost a company a certain amount anyway, it's better to produce as much as possible. The problem with this theory is that PS3's aren't selling as much as they need to get the benefits. I don't know the exact numbers nor can you actually predict how popular something is going to be accurately, but it could actually help them to drop the price further.
