The 20gb model hasn't been sold in Europe, and it appears that they will soon stop selling them in the US as well.

Good news for all seeing how much was missing from the console.

After the $499 edition of the next-gen console is removed from the Sony Style Web site, Sony confirms the console is being phased out.

"Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90 percent in favor of the 60GB [PS3], so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of PR. "Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America." The 60GB model retails for $599 in the US.

        Tek, how many times have I said PS3 > Wii. And not you too Cat, I may have to find a few more bugs just for you supporting the Wii.

    I was never going to get the lame 20GB anyways.
    I always go for the big stuff, like the 60GB model.

      Haha, same here. I have the 60GB PS3, and the Premium 360. I don't know why anyone would want to get the 20GB. ^^;

    With its retail price here at almost 1000 dollars a piece I dont think I'll be getting it, not any time soon anyway. Wii is much better and not to mention cheaper..

    I'm not getting a PS3 considering the price here is like £500. I'll probably be getting a Wii in the future.

    I wasn't going to get a 20GB anyway. This just makes it easier to keep up the dream and not quit saving until I get the 60GB. Wii will have to hold me over for a while though.

    PS3 isn't a rip off. Its expensive due to the blu-ray dvd player. Just a blu-ray dvd player on its own costs around £350-£400. Anyway what differences does a 20gb PS3 compared to a 60gb PS3?

    Why put in a blu-ray dvd player? sony is just killing itself by overpricing thier merchandise and nintendo is better. im definatly getting a wii. people say things like "omg the ps3 is so much better its got good graphix" well graphics isnt everything. The wii has better gameplay and its worth the price. unlike the ps3

    I'm be waiting at least 1 year before even thinking about PS3...it's too damn expensive =)

    mettaur Apr 13, 07
    Bah, I knew this'd happen sooner or later. It's just too damn expensive. I bet even the 20GB one will get a price-drop soon, even though the CEO said that they won't drop the price this year.

    I'm not surprised to see them discontinuing it. There has been very little interest up here at the moment, and even though there are a lot of people who can't afford the full 60GB model most just consider it the only one worth getting since the latter one can't hold as much.

    It's not too much of a loss, but those on a budget probably won't like the idea of having to either pay through the nose or forgo the PS3 for cheaper consoles.

    Woah, woah, waitaminute- lemme compare this:

    20GB = $500
    60GB = $600

    That's a load of crap! You're telling me they expected people to buy a version that has a third of its power for only a $100 difference!?

    >.> No wonder no one bought it...

    OOTER Apr 13, 07
    The hard drive size has nothing to do with the "power" of the console. Considering many people wont even use the 20GB storage (i.e those who use it for gaming and not storing all their music/videos/porn on) I am surprised it had as big an influence on the American consumers as it did.

    $100 can get you a lot more than 40GB of storage anyway.

    Dragons Call Apr 13, 07
    Meh, memory then. But if the console is all ready at $600 dollars, why get something with a good bit less memory just to save a $100? I mean, you're all ready spending half a thousand right there, might as well throw in another hundred for a better deal.

    But hey, to each their own.

    Gary Apr 13, 07
    I'm with OOTER on this I don't think the extra 40 gigs storage is actually all that useful for most people, I think some just mistakenly think it means more powerful
  • 0
    OOTER Apr 13, 07
    It could be the difference between people getting the PS3 one month or having to wait another month for their next pay packet for that extra $100.

    And however much money I was spending I wouldn't be inclined to spend an extra $100 on something I wouldn't use (if I felt I was not going to use over 20GB).

    As I said, I am surprised it made that much of a difference to the American buyers, although I suppose many people would have gone for the 60GB one as a sort of status symbol. After all, the higher the number the better?

    Master Zhang He Apr 13, 07
    Could mean a price drop for the 60GB version. If they don't drop the price of the 60GB version or come with a new cheaper unit, then they should have just continued selling the 20GB.

    Gary Apr 13, 07
    Yeah seems to me to be a status symbol, we didn't have a choice over here though, I think I'd rather have saved the cash and got a 20 gig model. I don't see myself using all that space.

      Krunal Apr 14, 07
      I got the only available 60gig system, and I've already used 20gigs up. I've got about 40 gigs remaining, so taking that into consideration, 20gigs would have been FAR too less.

    OOTER Apr 14, 07
    But how much of that is actually necessary? On my 360 I've barely used 5GB and don't see me using much more. If I download a demo or video I can delete it when I'm finished with it. It really depends on the individuals plans for their PS3. If you want to store all your videos and music on it then yeah sure, the 60GB one would be better, but I really didn't anticipate the extra storage space making such a huge difference but it seems it has.

    Gary Apr 14, 07
    I suppose it depends on the person(as OOTER said), I haven't even used a gig of my 60 gig ps3, and less than 5 off my xbox 360 (had it since launch)
