Well, they're confirmed to exist! That's all we know for now. Maybe there will be more details on this week's Pokemon Sunday (around Saturday late night). And now, a translation of a Japanese Yahoo! page from Pokebeach.com:

We learned on the 7th that "Pocket Monsters Gold and Silver," the second entry in the popular RPG series, originally released on the Gameboy system in November of 1999, will be remade for the Nintendo DS this autumn under the titles "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver." New elements will be added in this tenth anniversary return to the Johto Region.

A continuation of the original series (Pocket Monsters Red, Green, Blue, and Pikachu), Gold and Silver recorded remarkable sales of 23,000,000 copies worldwide. It introduced monsters that hadn't appeared in the gameboy games, along with various new features.

Red and Green, the first games of the Pokemon series, were remade for the Gameboy Advance in 2004 as "Fire Red and Leaf Green," making this the second set of remakes. While Red and Green had fantastic upgrades in their transition from Gameboy to Gameboy Advance, this time the games are skipping the Gameboy Advance and going directly from Gameboy to DS. So they will almost certainly have drastically upgraded graphics and sound. Details will be released on the official site shortly.

Currently in development for the Nintendo DS are the newest entries in the Pokemon series: "Pocket Monsters HeartGold and SoulSilver." Taking place in the Johto region, the games will be upgraded with all of the series' current features and will also be paced with brand new features. This year marks the tenth anniversary of "Pocket Monsters Gold and Silver"'s release on the original gameboy, so its revival is only fitting. Since its release in 1999, the game has sold over 23,000,000 copies worldwide.

I still have Silver in great condition, with just about all Pokemon...not sure if I want to do that collection again, depends on the other features.

Finally. I hope the re-make doesn't turn out crap, but hell I'm getting this!

But what is with the incredibly shite names? They didn't even give them new names, just added heart and soul to gold and silver.

YES! Finally. The BEST Pokémon games finally getting remade. Hopefully the names don't reflect what the games will turn out like. Honestly, I liked the rumored Dusk Gold and Dawn Silver names better. But still, I'm gettin' this.

Sounds crap, it'll be the same game as Gold and Silver just with slightly better graphics and maybe a feature or two from later games. Even less imaginative than the other Pokemon games.

It's not going to be just about remaking it, it's also about refining it. People will hope that the game will acquire a Platinum-like difficulty where it keeps getting harder after the Elite 4. And the Elite 4 in this game is merely the halfway point.

Oh yes, because we all still have perfectly working G/S/C cartridges in perfect condition and a usable gameboy color.

Seeing as I sold mine YEARS ago, I would love to pick it up.

I can't wait for it, please don't change to much (fighting in 2 regions kicked ass)

My Game Boy Color still works. Hell, I even turned it on the other day to play some Gold, using the same batteries it's had for the past 6 or so years. But the game's design is horribly outdated, and it's a pain to play through after all this time.

Would be nice to have a refined version to turn to for us old school Pokemon fans.

I did that last year. I was going to take my Gameboy with me overseas in the hopes that it would give me something to do for the downtime with no worries of theft as it's worth about $2. Unfortunately I found after an hour playing it that I couldn't get into the game anymore.

Does this mean the Kanto regieon will be remade AGAIN? -_-
    • 0
      Reenee May 8, 09
Yeah, but done proper. The lack of freedom in the GSC Kanto was due to memory limitations of GBC cartridges.
      • 0
        Onvacation May 8, 09
But they already remade Kanto in Firered and Leafgreen >>
        • 0
          Reenee May 8, 09
But not done from the GSC angle.

          Example: Janine replaced Koga.
        • 1
          Onvacation May 8, 09
Still, it'd be a waste of money to buy the game if you had leafgreen/red because half the game would be the exact same as you already had save a few minor changes like buildings and gym members
        • 0
          Big A2 May 9, 09
You might aswell call buying Gold or Silver a wastse if you already own Red or Blue. Kanto was way different in Gold and Silver.
        • 1
          Onvacation May 9, 09
It wouldn't exactly be a waste, but if you brought leaf/fire would have been a huge waste if you get this after its near enough the same game, from memory all that was changed was Seafoam is gone, Graveyard is gone and the storyline was slightly different.
        • 0
          Euphoric May 9, 09
Yeah because it's not like you are getting the whole Johto region remade for the first time is it?
        • 0
          Onvacation May 9, 09
What game was Johto remade in before? My memory blanked
        • 0
          Euphoric May 9, 09
It hasn't been. Gold/Silver/Crystal have never been remade until now. Add to that they are widely seen as the best series and then you have the excitement over their remakes. Kanto was always a side part of that series and it will be the same in these remakes. That's no one can see why you are making such a big deal over it.
        • 0
          Onvacation May 9, 09
Maybe because as Reenee had already stated, The kanto part is about half the game. Not a small afterthought like you seem to suggest
        • 3
          Euphoric May 9, 09
She also mentioned that it's not Kanto as you know it from Red/Blue/Yellow. It's not the same game so quit trying to make a big deal out of absolutely nothing.
        • 0
          Onvacation May 9, 09
Geez, all i'm saying is i'm not looking forward to going to Kanto again for the 4th time, even if it is an 'extra' with a new plot and a few new spots. The rest is great really. Its not like i'm yelling the roof down about it >>
      • 0
        Onvacation May 9, 09
Jeez, a few less dungeons, buildings, and name changes and its not the 'kanto we know' and therefore worth the money buying a game where half of it is more or less identical to a game that came a year or so ago? And lol saying it has a different story then leaf/fire is stupid, get gym badges, fight badguys along way, win elite four. So be it

I'll probably get this, because i get all pokemon handheld games for old times sake, Playing the gold/silver land for the first time in 6 years will be fun, but i'm worried i won't want to play half the game because it'd be set in an area i've already treaded to death in Red/blue, Gold/silver and Fire/leaf and know like the back of my hand.

By the way, i'm not making a big deal with it, i just mentioned my small gripe at the Kanto regeon being remade for the 4rd time, and you 3 jumped on my back for it. So whos making the big deal here?
        • 1
          Insanity Prevails* May 9, 09
Are you suggesting that they should only remake half the game then? That makes zero sense. One of my best memories of Gold was travelling back to Kanto to revisit the old lands with some changes. If a remake is coming I want there to be a trip to Kanto involved.

You could easily say that Firered and Leafgreen certainly were not needed, as Kanto had already been done twice by that point.

          Onvacation May 9, 09
Thats exactly what i said at the time, since you mentioned it
        • 0
          Euphoric May 9, 09
^^ You are. You are saying that this game is a remake of red/blue just because part of the game is in the same area. That's utter rubbish. If that's still to hard to understand then you're not going to get it ever.
        • 1
          Reenee May 9, 09
Except that Kanto can be considered incomplete due to the space limitations of a Game Boy cartridge.

MORE can be added to both regions at once thanks to the DS card (with a theoretical maximum of 1GB).
  • 1
    Zaraze May 8, 09
Gold and Silver with updated graphics as well as features from the newer games and hopefully several more additions, if they don't go and screw it up these will easily be the best Pokemon games in a long time imo.
Of course they will do something wrong, this is too good to work out well.

Eh, I guess I'll get Soul Silver. I never liked Gold. (mostly cause A starter was fire type, so Ho-oh wasn't too good in E4 when you had a stronger starter by then usually)
    • 0
      Onvacation May 9, 09
Don't you get the same 3 starting Pokemans in both versions?
      • 0

I think he means he usually picks the fire starter, and thus doesn't need another good fire pokemon such as Ho-oh.

      It's 16 seconds of METAGAME.
      • 0
        CAROUSELAMBRATIMES3 May 10, 09
Yeh no worries there's an article up for this now. Whats Metagame anyway man, what is that, like a rough draft of the finished thing or something?
        • 0
          dwg14390 May 10, 09
Metagame is basically for people who plays this game for wins.
And by that I mean, choosing the best poke's, natures, iv's,ev's, it's basically a whole tournament I beleive.

Then again I sort of forgot, I havn't played pokemon in almost a year, but Its where the battles are really intense, and you think strategically in how your gonna win.

In fact there are some people who can automatically tell that they'll win or lose before a match has even started, by just seeing 1 or 2 pokemons. (As in they have every move and counter attack planned).
        • 0
          CAROUSELAMBRATIMES3 May 11, 09
So thats no different to the actual normal game in anyway then? its just the way its played, play to win.

How can the video be METAGAME then, I dont understand that one man.
        • 0
          Zaraze May 11, 09
The Metagame basically refers to the competetive Pokemon enviroment, where players raise Pokemon in a specific manner that heightens stats, to raise a Pokemon to the best it can be. This is done through things such as EV training, IV breeding, and so forth.
Whilst a base concept it may not seem different to the in-game gameplay, in the in-game storyline you can beat the game simply by levelling up Pokemon and giving them good moves. Try that in competetive play and you'll be eaten alive, there's a whole different 'side' to the game when you get into the competetive, from the mechanics involve in raising a Pokemon to be useful in the competetive enviroment, building teams, plotting movesets, thinking about what Pokemon appear most in teh current enviroment and how your team can handle it, ect.
It's not really easy to explain and unless you plan to get into competetive Pokemon I really wouldn't waste the time trying to figure it out.

Hope that gives you some basic idea of it, if you do want to learn more I'd suggest looking up a proper explanation from somewhere like Smogon.

    CAROUSELAMBRATIMES3 May 11, 09
Yeh thanks there Zaraze for the explanation man, I understand what that is, I.v.s, e.v.s and all sorts of v's - what I mean is, if thats the case, how could the video be metagame? he just walked around a bit.

ah right yeh thanks for the suggestion man, it's not that important though simply a curiosity, no worries.

I had a thought yeh imagine if they did like an adjustable camera in this, like in animal crossing; where you can drag it overhead top view or down like an over the shoulder view. doubt it'll happen, but it'd remedy the problem of visibility if you could chop and change like that.
    • 0
      Big A2 May 14, 09
By the looks of things, the game will still use sprites, which is fine, but it looks like there won't be an ajustable camera. It would be cool though.
