Dwayne Johnson starring as the lead role in the upcoming Gears of War movie, in my opinion, is a good idea. I think he's a good actor, and as a former wrestling fan, I still mark out for the guy. I don't know if Dwayne Johnson, personally, fits the character of Marcus Fenix, but it could work out.
Chris Morgan has recently started to write the script for the new 'Gears of War' Movie, and has now started to create a list of people to take up parts in the film. With Marcus Fenix as the most important character.
Although Cliff Bleszinski has said that he preferred a player in the line of Sean Penn, Morgan told MTV that he prefers Actor and wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for the part. Morgan said "They need to find someone who is a good player that is more than a hard and silent type. Morgan went on to say "I think The Rock is amazing. He is a genuine actor.
Everything seems to be coming into place for the movie, lets just hope it works out.

Killosity, all GOW has is good gameplay along with graphics. Plot wise, its pretty shitty. So even if the movie fails, it won't affect the franchise because its already established that the gameplay is where the game shines (like many other shooters). If the game had a good story then I would agree with you. Games like Bioshock and Mass Effect come to mind but not Gears.
Subz is right in regards to it not being franchise damaging but it still doesn't change that this film had a lot of potential to be good if things were changed which is now ruined since Rock is in it. He's a good entertainment wrestler guy and an alright comedy actor, but in serious films he completely sucks in my opinion. Having him as Fenix just shows this film doesn't have much potential, which whilst not damaging to Gears, is still a shame nonetheless.
The Rock is cool, but he isn't a great actor.
This film doesn't need great actors, just great action. I like The Rock as much as the next person, but I have to say, this is a weird possible pick for Fenix.
