Some big Chrono Trigger fans have been on a mission for a long time now to make a sequel to the original game. According to their website, it featured "~35 hours of game play, 10 multiple endings, and 23 chapters, much like the original Chrono Trigger; it was around 98% complete. The plot featured the original cast as they struggled against a new villain risen from the legacy of Zeal."

Subtitled Crimson Echoes, Square Enix has, sadly, pulled the plug on the project. While this is no surprise in the console community, we still wish, like many others, console companies would learn from the PC community and work with fans on projects like this instead of against them.

Of course, Square Enix are well within their rights to do this, though I think the matter of timing could have been handled in a more sensible fashion. Then again, Square Enix isn't exactly known for their tact or decency when dealing with the outside world, either.

Nonetheless, project member ZeaLitY remains a little optimistic that perhaps this is a sign of greater things to come: "I sincerely hope this action is a sign that Square Enix cares about the franchise and intends to produce future titles, and not merely a shortsighted legal exercise that will further alienate a tired, neglected fan-base."

The Gamer Access, however remains skeptical, noting that "previous projects were shut down years ago, and have we seen anything other than a remake? No, we have not."

In some ways, it seems like missed potential, as they go on to recall: "This angers me to no end. The team behind Crimson Echoes had no intention of making any money off of this project, nor was it started from scratch like previous endeavors. There a ton of ROM hacks that exist for tons of different games all over the internet, yet Square Enix feel the need to shut down any "threats", which would have only increased interest in the series. When fans modded Half-Life and created the first-person success we all know and love as Counter-Strike, what did Valve do? They bought the license for the game and made money off of it instead of arrogantly shutting down the hardwork of their fans.

"Why can't Square Enix do this? When you practically ignore a series with a massive fanbase and don't release a brand new game in it for 10 years you have to expect these things. Why not make some money and promote the work of your fans at the same time?"

Such a shame. I've been following this project over at Chrono Compendium for a long while and I was starting to get excited about it since Squeenix hadn't stuck their head in yet. Looks like they'll never learn.

Yeah, I've been following the project on Chrono Compendium too a little while before CT:DS came out. It looked really promising and from the details that they wrote, they seem to have put in a painstaking amount of hard work and effort into it.

SquareEnix really made themselves out to be the douchebags this time. Not just for shutting down such a promising project but when it was 98% completed and nearly ready to be released. Way to go SquareEnix, you guys always had a recipe for creating villains, but we all know who the real antagonist is here.

I'm not trying to condone piracy...

...but they COULD just continue the project underground.

You have to have charged for it in the first place for piracy to be possible. I think?
Anyway, I'm sure they're already doing this.

Well, I can understand why they did it. I mean, they own the series and all of that, but I still think that they could have at the very least taken the hint. There's a lot of people who want a sequel, so why won't they make one? I'm sure they'd make tons of money.

I'd understand if the fans were selling it, but they weren't, so I don't really see the problem -- it would increase the series' popularity.

At 98% completion? Are you kidding me? That's some of the worst timing I've ever heard of. Why can't Squeenix act cool for once? It sounds like all they do these days is make stupid and annoying moves here and there.

Square Enix is really strict on intellectual property and copyright related stuff. They sued that Korean company some years back for making a music video for a Korean singer that featured some Tifa-esque fight scenes.

... and they were trying to prevent piracy related to Advent Children Complete, with minimal success.

That scene was a major ripoff though, so I understand that.

Haven't seen it, but I trust your judgment.

          Thanks.

          It is here.

I'm not saying I'd sue, cause I couldn't be *bleep*ed to sue anybody, but it's understandable someone else would feel ripped off I guess. Still, like with the Chrono Trigger thing, why fight it? It would only be good for your sales. Too many laws laws laws...

    This is a complete travesty.

Square Enix doesn't deserve a fanbase if this is how they treat them.

      Frakking posers.

Just because somebody could possibly make a better sequel to the Crono series than they could - for free.

      Internet leak plox.

Hmmm... didn't SquareEnix congratulate the guys who made the Mother 3 translation?

Or maybe that was a different SquareEnix.

      You are correct. Good catch.
Just being a company though doesn't mean they all share the same opinions...and it happens often that execs are all about the bottom line while developers and such are much more 'human'. I imagine this is the case here.

By the way, just caught the cease and desist letter here. So not cool.

Damn SE is *bleep*ing stupid. Why wouldn't they help publish/sell/market after they were done and split the profits with the guys who made it. This could have been the easiest money those money grabbing whores could have ever made.
