Nintendo's Virtual Console online gaming service has entrenched itself as a viable platform for the Wii, with a growing selection of back catalogue titles. Next Monday, Nintendo will mark one hundred VC games with the release of the NES action-RPG classic, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The company reveals the VC also hits another milestone, with 4.7 million game downloads by Wii owners since the platform's launch.

The upcoming addition of Zelda II -- The Adventure of Link on June 4 marks the 100th classic game available on the Wii Shop Channel. And since going online Nov. 19, owners of Nintendo's hot Wii video game system have downloaded more than 4.7 million classic games from Wii's Virtual Console, a rate of more than 1,000 games every hour since launch. The top five classic game downloads globally to date, and their original system are:

  1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
  2. Super Mario 64 (N64)
  3. Mario Kart 64 (N64)
  4. Super Mario World (SNES)
  5. The Legend of Zelda (NES)

No they will probably have two others.

But two out of the 5 games there I own. But 4.7 million downloads is alot.

I own two in there original form, and two in previously released remakes. I figure that is the biggest reason OoT isn't in the top five, because so many people have it in about four different forms already.

With all the whining that's been going about the VC prices, I'm surprised it hit 4.7 million. I can't wait until Monday to see what comes with Zelda II.

Wow, i must say, i did not think that there would be so many downloads on the VC as of now. I also didn't expect to hear that they will have a hundred games in the VC.

Wow, 4.7 million downloads!?!?! I bet it will be more than double that in a few months. I'm not surprised that it has grown so popular though. I guess Nintendo made a pretty smart move adding the VC to the Wii.

People would buy more VC games (including me) if more Nintendo games came out. TurboGrafx-16 and the Sega games are getting really annoying. -.-

Well they are planning to release Paper Mario onto the VC this year. So there's a game people will be since it was release so close to the end of the N64.

No real surprises there with the first four games being all Mario, and the fifth Zelda. It's good to see the virtual console getting so many sales as well

Damn Nintendo is raking in the dough. Over 4.7 million downloads. That's a lot of downloads. I'm also not surprised that 4 out of the 5 top downloaded games are Mario. They will probably reach over 10 million downloads in a couple of months.
