Electronic Theatre reports on an interview with Nintendo UK's Wii Product Manager Rob Lowe in which Nintendo state that the Hardcore Gamer market is just as strong as ever.

Further pursuing this chain of though, Lowe was later questioned on the importance of each the Causal and Hardcore demographics, to which he stated that there’s significance in both: “For every Carnival Games there is a BioShock and for every Wii Fit there is a Resident Evil 5."

Of course the hardcore market is still exceptionally strong... on everything that isn't related to Nintendo. And that's why they created a console with last generation power and made a somewhat gimmicky (don't get me wrong, it is great with the majority of games I've played, especially Metroid Prime 3) controller to get the casual crowd to utterly join in so it could become a complete and utter family fad so they could make huge amounts of cash while the gamers who have stayed loyal for years see the results of their love and loyalty, aka nothing.

You have to give points where credit is due though. They have created the greatest of consoles and games for the casual crowd. They also definitely know how to be a business. Still doesn't mean they should have ever turned their back to the true fans of Nintendo. One day, it's going to bite them in the ass.

They do develop some hardcore titles, but not enough and don't dedicate enough resources to them.

Technically Nintendo themselves do not make all of these shovelware casual titles, they leave that to the 3rd party devs who want to make quick easy cash.

I'm still just waiting for Tri, which aside from No More Heroes and a few other titles, will be all I'll play on the thing.

They are technically right, they produce a hardcore game for every 'Wii' whatever. It's just that other developers clog the console with shovelware.
Although this whole 'Nintendo abandoning their hardcore fans' is a rather bold statement considering how well the Gamecube did, despite the fact Nitny were catering to their 'hardcore' fans then. If the Gamecube had actually sold half decently I doubt Nintendo would of turned to the Casual audience.
What's funnier still is it's after everyone let the Gamecube fail, they then proceed to moan about Nintendo 'betraying' them.

I totally agree with your point. As it says in the article "The debate still rages as to whether it was Nintendo who abandoned the Hardcore, or the Hardcore that abandoned Nintendo, but one thing is certain – Nintendo are selling more games and hardware than ever before."

If all the people whinning about Wii now had bought a GameCube, Nintendo wouldn't have needed to make more casual games!

Oh, and I'm not sure if I've said this before Zaraze, but I LOVE your avatar!

Thank you. Beyond all that something else seem to constantly overlook is the PS2's involvment. Hardware-wise it was the weakest console of it's generation, and it had more shovelware than the Wii does (Not to ratio but on sheer number). And yet it won that generation of the 'console war'. It also proved that there was a casual audience. If anything Nintendo took the basis of the PS2 ideal, and simply catered more so to the unappreciated Casual audience, whilst deciding to focus less on the Hardcore audience whom ditched them.
And the result speaks for itself, like or not but Nintendo were pretty much bang on in their decision making.
I'd also like to point out that if you simply compare first party line-ups, Nintendo is not that far behind Microsoft or Sony. It's the lack of third party support that hurts the Wii more than anything else.

wii is nothing like the PS2, the PS2 had quality games left right and centre. If the wii had that no one would care about the casual games, but it doesn't.

But for every one of those quality titles, there were at least 10 pretty bad games. The only difference is that with the wii, the bad titles are the focus.

The PS2 had thousands of games released for it, and a lot of shitty games were ignored because people knew they would be bad and they weren't advertised. Going by the ratios you may be right, but there were still far, far more good PS2 games than Wii games and the crappy ones that were released didn't stay around.

I would also like to know what this nonsense is about the Gamecube having a lot of games for the "hardcore" gamers out there. They had a lot of ports, and...that's really about it.

I think the shitty PS2 games were paid less attention to because there was a higher proportion of quality titles than there are for the Wii.

Look at the ammount of 'quality' Sony PS2 titles. Look at the Wii. Then look at third parties. The Wii lacks decent third party support, and that is the significant differance. Nintendo have a balance of 'Casual' and 'Hardcore' titles, it's Third Parties who flood the system with shovelware. Simply being 'Casual' doesn't make something bad.
And Moonrise that depends entirely on one's personal definition of Hardcore, but the Gamecube had just as many great first party titles as the PS2 and Xbox, and a lot of great multiplatform games, as well as some ports and remakes.

Zaraze hit the nail on the head. The problem with the Wii is that Nintendo are the only developer who consistently make superb games for the conosle. There is no third-party support. If you aren't a fan of Nintendo's first-party franchises, then there's pretty much no reason to own the Wii.
The PS2 may have had the most shitty shovelware last generation, but it also had a wide variety of quality games in different genres and made by different developers. That's what Nintendo should be aiming for.

It's technically Nintendo's fault there. Third-party devs might make the shovelware, but it's Nintendo who approves them. Which is why its so odd that Reggie says things like 'third-party devs aren't doing enough for the Wii' when it's Nintendo who aren't giving them any incentive to try.

    Cool Avvie Zaraze.

I prefer Casual games, but there are plenty of hardcore games on the wii too. IMO/TBH I think it is more of a party console, more to be played with friends.

There's only a few hardcore games for the Wii, certainly not enough for a hardcore gamer to go and buy a Wii without wasting their cash.

There's 2 main purposes for the Wii I find:

    1. The different way of playing games it has, as in using the Wii remote, or Wii balance board for Wii fit.

    2. For family entertainment.

So, I wouldn't consider the Wii hardcore at all pretty much.

I do not believe Nintendo have to constantly Justify the path they have taken with the Wii. They clearly went into this generation knowing the success of the PS2 and the Collossus that is Microsoft putting their console in the race. I applaude Nintendo for taking another route. And I am thankful for the change; as we have be subject to some fantastic titles this generation from the Wii.

    lol

I honestly can't name no other "hardcore game" by Nintendo other than Brawl, if that counts.
Really, what other hardcore titles are there? Straberry Patch Kids: Pogeymans 2?

I'd love to hear you explain just what a ""hardcore game"" is.
