Electronic Theatre reports on the comments offered by Microsoft's Shane Kim, stating that Project NATAL shall extend the console's life cycle to 2015.

Today, however, a Microsoft executive has stated that the answer does not lie within the lifespan of the console, but of the product itself, which will extend the console cycle in the same way Nintendo suggested their late-arriving GameCube peripherals would. Project NATAL, currently suggested to launch in time for the busy Christmas sales period next year, will apparently provide enough vitality to keep the Xbox 360 strong until 2015.

Regardless of DVD, I can't see a peripheral extending ANY console's life. It's all about games, not what controller you play them with.

What about the games that come out for Project Natal. Microsoft are treating Project Natal like a console launch as while it is just a microphone sensing camera device, it is like having completely new gaming hardware that can re-invigorate the console.

I thought MS was scoffing at Sony's 10 year plan before????? I could be wrong, that's just what I vaguely remember.

I suppose the current-gen could last a lot longer than what people are expecting. Sony's been looking into 3D and Nintendo's been exploring the possibility of holographic storage. Perhaps that's just the second phase to extend the current-gen life. Although, I don't see how they're placing so much emphasis on Project NATAL extending the 360's lifespan.

So in other words I might as well pound sand for 6 years. The 360 simply doesn't have the hardware to last until 2015, unless they plan on turning it into a wii clone. In which case I'll be buying my first Sony console. I'll give up on gaming before I give up on the traditional controller. Everyone else can have their stupid novelty resting home peripherals.

What's the point? Something else will come about before 2015 anyway.

I can't see myself still playing my 360 so much by 2015, they could be spending their spare time in better ways than this, if you ask me. >.>
