In the future you may be able to invite your fellow Wii gamers to come and play a game of your choice with you on the Nintendo Wii. So if both you and a friend are logged onto a Nintendo server all you have to do is simply send them an invite asking them if they would like to play whatever game you want to play with you. Sounds awesome!

Nintendo last summer filed for an “Invitation system for on-line video games” patent, which was issued just a few days ago. Patent No. 20070123353 describes a system where one user can send an online game invitation to another friend that they see logged into the server. So let’s say you’re playing Mario Kart Wii, and your friend is playing Pokémon Battle Revolution, and you’re both logged in online. You could, based on this patent, invite the other to play Mario Kart Wii online with you. Or, you could’ve just been playing the same game but separately, and this invitation system could let you play together.

Now let’s think about this. In order for such an invitation system to work, wouldn’t you need to be constantly logged in online in order for a friend to see you? Also, if you’re able to see which friends are online and what they’re playing, wouldn’t you need to have some sort of buddy list? Nintendo constantly files patents they use, patents they don’t use, and patents they will use in 1235832 years. Could this be a future feature for the Wii, or is Nintendo simply planning ahead.

I'm hoping they actually use this soon. It seems like a great idea. Although, if somebody gets an invite wouldn't they most likely be playing their Wii? I doubt someone will stay in their main menu waiting for an invite. Unless the Wii turns that sexy blue color while you are in the middle of a game, to inform you that you have been invited. =D

Actually no you would get an invite while you are playing a game. You wouldn't just have to wait at the main menu for an invite, at-least that's what the article said. It would probably work like this. Your friend would be playing his Wii and all of a sudden get a message saying "So and so has invited you to come and play blank with them. Do you accept? Please select yes or no." And then if you select yes your current game would save and end and then you would go play the other game with your friend. If you select no you would just continue playing your game.
