Modern Warfare 2 to be biggest selling title of the year

Well it seems that Activision are sticking their neck out and saying that Modern Warfare 2 will not only be the best ever selling Call of Duty game, but that it will indeed be the biggest title of the year. The connotations of this are clear: Activision are expecting Modern Warfare 2 to be GOTY.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare took the industry by storm when it shipped for Holiday '07. Now a year and a half later, Activision's blockbuster shooter has sold a whopping 13 million copies. Activision Blizzard once again hopes to dominate the holiday shopping season later this year when the company ships Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2.

We asked Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during E3 what his expectations for the title are. Not surprisingly, he's extremely confident. And he should be – Infinity Ward has the pedigree, gamers are hungry for more, and everything that's been shown for the title so far has looked phenomenal.

    It gives information about the number of copies CoD4 sold and also their reasoning behind why they expect it to be GOTY. If you have nothing constructive to add then I'd prefer you don't post at all.

      They have just as much right to criticize an article for being pointless as you have for posting said article.

      Just the same, I don't know if I MW2 is going to make GOTY or not.

    The fact it's going to be one kinda goes without saying. AC2 might trump it though, but it's unlikely. MW2 and AC2 are the only sales giants I can think of this year, really.

      What about Bioshock 2? Won't that be out this year? If it's anything like the first one it'll destroy in the votes.

    I think Activision is forgetting Assassins Creed 2 and Uncharted 2. I have no idea what 360 exclusives are coming out this year, so forgive me for not including them here.

      Most people thought that the first Assassin's Creed bombed, so I doubt the second one will get as much attention. I know nothing about Uncharted 2, but since Modern Warfare 2 is multiplatform, it has a better chance automatically.

      I think Bioshock 2 might be set to get GOTY again after its prequel just did a couple years ago. Especially since now it's going to be on the PS3 as well. There's also the off-chance that Halo 3: ODST might do well, mostly just because of the world 'Halo'.

    I've gotta agree, I don't think any game is a "given" GOTY, which makes this statement kinda a bold one to make. Although, it is highly likely with only one or two other games having the potential to be bigger.
