This seems kind of expected, but after MK vs. DC's toned-down departure, series co-creator, Ed Boon, spoke about the next game, tentatively titled MK9. Confirming his reveal from Comic-con, he says that the title will be returning to the franchise's roots and will most certainly be an M rated title like its predecessors.

Despite financial turmoil at Mortal Kombat publisher Midway, the Chicago-based MK team is soldiering on with the ninth fighting game in the series, currently known only as MK9. Series co-creator Ed Boon says it will definitely be M-rated.

Boon has been dropping small tidbits about the bloody fighting game sequel via his Twitter account, writing "Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick!!" Boon also backs up what he told us last year during an interview at Comic-Con, that Mortal Kombat 9 will be a Mature rated game—and it "isn't going to have Superheroes in it"—unlike the T-rated, toned down Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

"People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK," Boon writes. He previously ponders "I hope we aren't taking these too far."

We've talked to a couple MK team members over the past year who have told us similar things, that MK9 would be "disgusting" in its violence, a return to form that we expect will be cathartic to longtime Mortal Kombat fans turned off by the less gory MK vs. DC... and maybe even a few of the game's developers.

I wanna hang with the dudes in the picture.

But ahh..I just hope it's more like MK1-3 than pretty much everything afterward.

I personally never was a fan of Mortal Kombat, but this is damn good news.

I wouldn't mind it being like Deception though. As far as the "3D" versions have been, it's the best of them.

Haven't played, but heard some good things I think. Mix old with the new?

You know, just because it's gonna have an M rating doesn't mean it's gonna be a good game.

    Just saying.

True. But a lot of people (misinformed or stupid people) thought that after MKvsDCU they were going to keep MK as a teen franchise, which upset a lot of people (the vids on youtube were hilarious ). So it's just a line Boon's throwing out to get those people to bite again.

Deception was good, Armageddon had a big roster of playable characters and was good as well. Can't say anything about Deadly Alliance though.

I will support whatever their next title is...I want Midway to get through this and bring out a sequel to Shaolin Monks.

Whatever they do they'd better go back to traditional Fatalities. I hated the "make your own" fatality system in Armageddon. It basically ruined the whole MK experience.

Agreed. Completely took out the originality of fatalities for each fighters...not to mention the combo lists were butchered as well for having too many fighters in one game. Though they had something going with the Story mode in Deception, they should bring that semi-free roam thing back.

Since this is next gen though, getting all the fighters back like Armageddon did (without the space limitation) and the story mode like Deception and MK can make a good comeback.

Yeah, they really did a good job with Konquest in Armageddon. Much better than Deception's.

But they may be able to bring back a good portion of Armageddon's cast since this is next-gen. It'll just take more work to have each fighter use their own unique fighting styles (3 this time please, 2 got boring last time).
