With the success of the Monster Hunter series, Namco Bandai is readying a similar title to get in on some of the market share. Their take comes in the form of eerily familar God Eater for the PSP. The game allows 4 people to link up and take down monsters and features over a hundred missions and an assortment of weapons. It also seems like a multiplayer-heavy experience.

So far, the game has a fall Japanese release with no word on an international timeframe, although a North American trademark has been filed.

A scan of Famitsu revealed God Eater, a Namco Bandai developed cooperative action game for the PSP where four players link up for good old god slaying fun.

Does the art style remind you of Shin Megami Tensei at all? That’s what I thought of first.

God Eater has a hundred missions and transforming weapons. The deus ex machina system allows players switch their weapon from a blade to gun to a hybrid “predator form”. Weapons can be further customized with synthesis items. God Eater seems like its designed as a multiplayer game, but it has a single player story mode too. When hunting solo players are joined by one of five computer controlled NPCs.

God Eater is slated to come out in Japan this fall, which is around a year after we first caught wind of the game from a Japanese trademark. A North American release has not been announced, but on the bright side Namco Bandai filed a trademark for God Eater in the US.

Absolute bullshit. This will never surpass the glory that is Monster Hunter. The series has been on for over 5 years. I doubt that it's gonna be easily overtaken by Namco Bandai. This just isn't their type of game.

I played the original Monster Hunter and thought it sucked. In my opinion, the combat system was innovative and could have been fun had it been implemented differently.

      Maybe online is better.

So... is -this- game going to have proper online play? 'Cause if not, I don't see it having a chance. That's about the only feature that Monster Hunter really lacks that Namco Bandai could take advantage of.

right, that's what i'm thinking. give it proper online play, and i'll definitely play. also it needs to retain the sadistic difficulty.

looks like it could be cool, tbh. i'm usually not too keen on clones, but they definitely have a chance to address some of GLARING monster hunter issues that capcom replies to with FUUUUUUUUU

I don't think they're necessarily trying to trump Monster Hunter (because that's going to be wicked wicked hard; I mean, the BEST version of MH Portable 2ndG is getting close to a million), but rather, they're just trying to jump in on the market.

Like Sega did with Phantasy Star Portable.

Yeah, exactly. Namco Bandai are probably well aware of the Monster Hunter brand's power and influence. It's going to be hard going against a Goliath such as that with the hopes of toppling it. But it'll definitely be interesting to see what they do with this project and whether they address any of MH's shortcomings.

Goliath will win. Consider this, MH is big in Japan. I mean *bleep*ing humongous. They're getting this out into the west, so the series really will kick off! I'll be absolutely cut if this "rip-off" manages to surpass.
