Doug Lombardi, the same guy from Valve who told us that Valve won't develop for the PS3 because of the confusing architecture seems to have changed his mind. Yesterday, at the Left 4 Dead 2 event in London, he told his interviewers that Valve is currently looking for talented people that know how to program using the PS3's code.

Left 4 Dead 3 on all 3 systems?

Valve isn't quite as against the idea of developing games for the PS3 as we previously thought. Speaking to Valve's Doug Lombardi at the Left 4 Dead 2 event in London today (look out for the full interview soon), we discovered that the company is still "up on the idea" of developing for the PS3 -- it's just waiting until it has hired some decent PS3 coders. "If you look at The Orange Box -- PC: 96 on Metacritic, 360: 96 on Metacritic, PS3 like... 84 or something. That's not even close to where we are right now with the 360 and PC and the reason is people."

Lombardi went on to say that "we have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys and then all bets are off. We can take the same sort of strides and get the quality out of the box and offer the same support post-launch on that platform, as well." Sounds like Valve-developed PS3 games are more a case of "when" than "if," nowadays.

When asked whether Valve is actively seeking to hire PS3 developers, he noted that "Valve is always looking to hire people. So yeah, definitely." Are you a dedicated PS3 coder who wants to make Left 4 Dead 3 for the system? You know what to do. We look forward to seeing your handiwork in late 2010.

Sounds more like they're saying this as a PR speech than a active plan. At least he's not bashing the PS3, but it sounds like he's going "Yeah yeah, sure if we get the right guys we'll make PS3 games."

    That's what I'm thinking anyway.

Heh, exactly what I thought when I read the article. Hes probably saying that to shut up the PS3 fans a bit.

Well, if they are planning to bring the same graphics to the PS3, I wouldn't mind if they never made a PS3 game ...
I think the more talented PS3-devs are looking for a more rewarding result then zombie-shooters with shallow graphics.

I doubt the " more talented PS3-devs " could make Half Life 2: Episode 3 for the PS3.

Rofl, shallow graphics? The graphics on L4D are fantastic.

Anyway if graphics is all you care about then you mustn't be a true gamer, its the gameplay and sometimes the story that makes a game what it is.

Left 4 Dead *does* have good graphics, the only thing is that it doesn't look good unless the graphics settings are jacked up all the way on everything. The 360 can't handle this and my PC, less than a year old, has four gigs of RAM, and can't handle it without lagging a little bit. So only top-of-the-line PC's and laptops can handle the highest graphics settings without lag, which like you said, looks fantastic. But sadly most screenshots aren't taken on the highest settings so it doesn't look as good to other people.

The zombie models could use a bit of work though; they're a bit cheesy.

Most decent graphics cards can play Left 4 Dead tops. RAM ain't gunna be much of a factor.

But you're right, the graphics are good in Left 4 Dead. And anyone that doesn't want Valve on their console due to aesthetics is a complete moron, considering they're one of, if not the best dev team ever.

Wtf you on. My laptop pwns left for dead and TF2 on max, even in hectic places like when a mob is charging at you and I'm throwing Molotov all over the place.

It has 4 gig ram, 2.3 intel core 2 dou and a 9600gt.

Only cost £600 and its no where near the "top of the line". What G card you got?

If only the thumbs down option was still around, your comment would be at around -20 by now, deservedly I might add

It sucks that gamers as ignorant as that are actually pretty common.

L4D is the only series (though it's not a series yet) along with GoW that I would love to play.

I don't know. His previous comment of how he doesn't want to develop for the PS3 makes me not care if he develops on the PS3. So if he does, I don't care, I'm not going to really be interested in their games unless it is screamingly good.

I have a problem with devs that have a stuck-up attitude. Which is why that Activision comment put them on my poopy list too.

There not stuck up. They just develop for who they want when they want. Of course this is a crime against humanity. (unless they dev exclusively for PS3, then its ok)

Well they have a right to develop for whomever they want to, that's fine. It's the whole thing about making it a big deal or using some big excuse other than "Well, we're not interested" or something. I consider it more or less stuck up when a person/company puts down another, to excuse themselves or make themselves look better. Just how I view it, not saying that's the definition of it, just my personal thoughts.

(The parenthetical phrase wasn't toward me was it? Because if they were exclusive for PS3 and said something similar about the 360 I'd feel the same way. I'm far from a fanboy, and although I love exclusives---for all three consoles---it's again the haughty explanations for not deving on the others that get to me)

Except for those times when they said the PS3 was a waste of Sony's and the gamers' time...

That's right and wrong, depending on whom you mean when you say 'they'. Valve as a whole aren't anti-PS3, never have been, it just hasn't been a strong business move for them so they've never done it. Yeah, a number of people who speak on Valve's behalf and even the higher-ups of the company have said some obnoxiously stupid shit, but that was their own half-baked opinion which was twisted by the gaming public.

      Hideo1 Jul 4, 09
Their reasoning for not developing for PS3 wasn't because of being stuck-up though, people just interpreted it that way (and then spread hate-filled fanboy propaganda) because of a few things said by a small number of higher-ups.

Well . . . I hope so. I haven't really followed news on Valve, so I can only go by limited knowledge on it all.

On a semi-lighter note, Insomniac seems to like Valve . . . so I suppose they can't be too bad of a company, since Insomniac is pretty good with themselves.

Glad to see Valve being open to the PS3.

I'm sure the next big thing Valve will do is a Steam-like system on consoles.
