Though Visceral Games' lauded horror title Dead Space did well enough in the end with 1.5 million in sales, it didn't exactly reach Gears of War status, say. Turns out though numbers are actually about double that, with the studio's manager Glen Schofield estimating half of the people who played the game bought it used.

Oddly he cites only console figures -- what about PC sales?

“We looked at how many we sold. We also looked at — we didn't have online which is one of the big features that you need to have to kind of keep it in the house a little bit longer these days,” Schofield said in an EA podcast. “But then we also did studies on sort of how many unique users there were on the PSN network and Xbox Live. And realized, you know what, there's over three million people that have played Dead Space. Maybe we've only sold 1.5 million or whatever the number is. But there's something there because that means that, OK, there were a lot of used sales. So there's a lot of people when I go out and talk to [them]… it seems that everybody has played it or heard about it or whatever.”

If half the people who purchased the game bought it used, that means everyone that originally purchased a new copy eventually sold it, right? Maybe not, but this article does little to enhance the perceived intelligence of Glen Schofield. Because, like, I heard a few people bought the game used, so almost half must have bought it used, right? Or else the game was marketed poorly and didn't live up to potential. Maybe the later?

That's right. If half the people who ever played it bought it used, that means EVERYONE who bought it ended up trading it in, and for everyone who DIDNT trade in their new copy, one of the resold copies was resold a second time or more. Says something about Glen Schofield's intelligence, or the quality of Dead Space.
