Do we all remember last year's Mass Effect controversy? While BioWare believe that entire debacle was completely over-blown, they do think that sex scenes in games can help reflect real human relationships in a "sophisticated mature experience".

Mass Effect hit mainstream headlines when clueless US news anchors found out it contained saucy fumbles under the covers. BioWare's latest RPG, Dragon Age, gets jiggy with it at some point too. But BioWare says it's simply to reflect real human relationships in a "sophisticated mature experience".

If sex is going to be a new mainstay of gaming, I won't be taking part. Not that I don't like it, hell naw; it's just that it shouldn't be entirely necessary. SOTC and MGS4 had no sex, and they have the best single player campaigns out there.

The innuendos are worth mentioning, though.

I agree with you. Sex shouldn't seem like a necessary thing in a video game, same as violence, or drugs, or foul language.

I think certain things should only be included if they seem like they fit the game's style.

For instance, if you're making a game like GTA, then I think everything I mentioned above should be there in some form or another, but having a random sex scene in a game like MGS or DMC would be a bit unnecessary and ridiculous...

Actually its quite obvious they did it in the helicopter in MGS4

It was implied, but not actually seen. This article is referring to actual visual sex, not just two people disappearing into a chopper stored in the back of a cargo plane.

Tbh, I think that 'innuendo' or 'behind the scenes sex' is all that is needed in most instances. Obviously most people in a relationship are going to have sex, so if game creators think sex is neccessary to further an in-game relationship or make it seem more realistic, then that's fine, but in most instances it's not neccessary to actually show it.

      MGS4 had no sex
There is a very fine line between using the notion of sex to create a more mature, sophisticated experience, and pushing it so far that it goes over the top and actually takes away from what the developers were aiming for. MGS4 did have a sex scene, but it was implied - remember when Naomi pulls Otacon into the helicopter and closes the door? That moment helped create a more in-depth relationship between their two characters. Now let's pretend that, in the end of Shadow of the Colossus, after Wander slays all the colossi and revives Mono, the two have a rough, raunchy, on-screen sex scene like that part towards the beginning of 300 where Leonidas boned his wife. That would've detracted from the experience, no?

There's a way to do it, and there's a way not to do it, and there's a certain degree that you can do it to and certain situations that you can do it in. Do it right, or don't put it in at all.

Sex scenes help create a "sophisticated mature experience"?

I think I tried that line before.

The sex scenes executed in Mass Effect are well done and tasteful. I have absolutely no problem with them being included with future games.

On another note; near the end of the game, right after the sex scene, Ashley (possible romance choice) turned over and looked up to start the "Morning After" cutscene. At that right moment, I heard the "Da-dink!" and saw "Achievement Unlocked". I lol'd

Might as well confirm theres a sex scene in Mass Effect 2 lol.

I don't think its necessary to have sex in a video game to make it 'mature', there are plenty of things that they can do to give it an edge. Having the proper atmosphere for a start.

As long as it isn't as boring as the sex in GTA4 -_-

The sex in GTA isn't boring, per se; it's just taseless. And that's the kind I think that I don't want in my video games.

It's awkward and pointless, and is just put in to act 'adult'.
