Games We Love but Wish We Could Love Playing

With Activision seemingly creating every conceivable peripheral to support its games, it might be surprising to hear that MTV Games is a bit more cautious about introducing new peripherals to the market. MTV Games' General Manager, Scott Guthrie, talked with IGN about how the peripherals must enhance the gameplay and experience in a "meaningful way." But that doesn't mean that more perpherals won't be added; however, don't get your hopes up for a cowbell add-on for Rock Band.
It seems publishers are getting a bit too peripheral-happy these days. Activision is already clogging things up with Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and now Tony Hawk Ride controllers, and THQ recently announced they'd be releasing their own peripheral controller eventually.
MTV Games, however, won't be so quick to add bulky, plastic controllers to all their future titles.
"It's all about the software and gameplay. If those can be enhanced in a meaningful way by peripherals, then you ought to go down that path," said General Manager Scott Guthrie to IGN.
"If it isn't [enhancing gameplay] or it's not an incremental value add, then you don't do it."
Guthrie continued saying "You're always going to see developers stretching that envelope. But from a publishing standpoint, it comes down to the gameplay and what's going to be added with that."
MTV Games recently entered into a partnership with film producer Jerry Bruckheimer to create more story-focused video games. It will be interesting to see if those titles will see peripheral add-ons.
