Increased development costs and the weak pound mean that Activision will be charging more for Modern Warfare 2. And it looks like this may set a precedent for other developers to do the same in the future. Although expensive, I can't see this being much of a problem, and still expect it to sell well.

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will cost £54.99 GBP on all platforms when it is released this autumn - and that's just for the standard edition, not the super special OMG comes with nightvision goggles edition.

Activision claims that the weak performance of the pound, combined with record development costs, have forced the cost of the game to be raised to £54.99 on all platforms.

No it won't. It'll have an RRP of £54.99, which is only £5 higher than the standard RRP of £49.99. Retailers nearly ALWAYS discount games themselves these days, so it'll retail for no more than £44.99 in most places, just like £49.99 RRP games typically retail for about £39.99.

Depends on the retailer, but I think the point is that it's going to cost more than most (if not all) new games, which is a curious conflict with Bobby Kotick's comments previously about the PS3.

    That.

The most annoying thing about it is it's still going to sell like a *bleep*ing beast and the other devs may just follow suit. *rage*

Also, for anyone who was bitching about L4D2 I hope this puts things into perspective

Ironic that Activision want Sony to lower the price of the PS3 and yet they are raising the price of their games.

What a load of shit, most games that come out are £39.99 even the big ones, If they keep it at £54.99 I am not buying it no matter how much I want the game, it's rediculous!

I'm glad i have joined a game rental service so if any other developers do this it shouyldn't affect me.

this is why i *bleep*ing hate the video game industry

these jackoffs can get away with releasing the same game 9000 times and then raise the price ABOVE the industry standard. if you buy this game - you are personally responsible for speeding up the inevitable downturn of the video game industry.

Woah, hold on there. It's the company's decision, it's "their bad," and hell, I will buy the game because it's my favorite FPS series. This is Activision's bullshit, but Infinity Ward are kick-ass developers. If I do "speed up" this downturn in the process of purchasing the game, then so be it. Don't get me wrong, I don't like what is being done here, raising the price, but meh, it's for that region, and the chances of sales doing better with raised prices are slim, they may come to their senses and put it back to regular retail price. I will enjoy it and move on with life.

Personally I will only be renting it for the single player campaign, but if you want a good deal on purchasing it, I suggest craigslist.org. It's where I purchase all the games I don't pre-order.

I believe the multi-player will be much of the same, with the inclusion of those noob perks (martydom, juggernaut, stopping power & last stand). I'll end up getting frustrating & board pretty quick!

Jesus that is way too expensive. I know it is one of the most anticipated games this year but that is way too much.

I do hope that some retailer's sell it for slightly less but it won't be an awful lot less.

They lied about "all platforms". It won't cost more than £35 on PC and I'll be having a blast. Still, it's the most moronic shit I've ever heard. Activision have gone completely EA and are rapidly killing a series that had long been my favourite.

      Daweii Jul 17, 09
EA were never this bad and EA over the last 2 years have redeemed themselves with new IP's and good sequels to longlasting franchises. Sure their servers are a bit off at times and that can tarnish the online aspect but they are twice the developer they were 2-3 years ago. Activision are far worse than EA ever were.

As it goes, I did intend to put "the new EA", but point made; true stories.

I already Pre-ordered and paid £34.95 for mine, so theres no need in me worrying.

But i know that retailers will not stick to this price of £55.
  • 0
    FinalFantasyFanaticc Jul 18, 09
The price won't stick, caus thats goddamn pathetic.

£40 is enough to pay for a game, let alone £55!

They can *bleep* off, i ain't buying it if it costs that much.

    kspiess Jul 18, 09
That's a crazy price to pay for the game.

That whole "we had to raise the price thing" sounds like complete lies to me. Obviously they know Modern Warfare 2 is going to be one of the best selling games of all time. It sort of insulting that they are implying they wouldn't make their money back at the normal price for a game.
    • 1
      Hideo1 Jul 18, 09
It's not sort of insulting, it's completely insulting. Everything about this little mind *bleep* of theirs is insulting.

Let's compare the UK price and the US price using Amazon.

Amazon.com states the game as $59.99. Apparently, $59.99 is worth little more than £35, and it's being sold for at least £45.

    Irritating to say the least.

    Ech0ez Jul 18, 09
The stupid thing is the fact it will sell regardless of thi ridiculous price tag and that leaves chance of it starting a trend, which isn't good.
Now to hope the PC version isn't affected by this and proceed to chalk yet another one up for the PC.
    • 0
Star of Spurs Jul 18, 09
The PC version is £40, and I pretty much agree it'll still sell.
      • 0
        Celes Leonhart* Jul 18, 09
Play quotes PC RRP to be £35 and are selling it for £30. They can't pull this shit on PC, no one would pay £40 for it.

    Dramon Knight Jul 18, 09
    What that's way too much.

I'm going to have to wait a while before getting this then, or hope to find it in a second-hand store. Because to me, any game that costs more than £40 is a waste of money. (sometimes £45 is okay too, but that depends on how much I've anticipated the game)
