It's been known that Monster Hunter 3's online service will be running on a pay-to-play model. However, with the game coming out shortly in Japan, Capcom has confirmed the pricing for Japanese gamers to play online. Each copy of the game will come with a 20 day free trial. After that you'll need to throw down some cash to continue playing. However, as the article notes, things could turn out differently for the North American version.
With only days until it comes out Capcom confirmed Monster Hunter 3’s online mode will be pay to play. To access the online mode you need a hunting ticket, which are sold in tiers just like Monster Hunter G.
Before you fork over Wii Points you get a twenty day trial subscription. Afterwards, it’s 800 Wii Points ($8) for a 30 day subscription, 1,500 Wii Points ($15) for a 60 days, or 2,000 Wii Points ($20) for 90 days.
Please note the online fees are only for Japan. Monster Hunter, the original one for the PlayStation 2, also had a pay to play online mode in Japan, but the game was free to play here. Monster Hunter Tri is slated for a domestic release this fiscal year which means sometime between now and March 31, 2010.

This is Wii pricing!? Screw that.
And if you didn't notice the whole "Japan only" part... wow. Hell, their PC version of the game, Monster Hunter Frontier, is free to play out of Japan. They also add new equipment and quests on a regular basis on the PC game. Every season they add a new creature and some amount of quests and equipment.
There's also the fact that the game still is still free to play offline, even in Japan, and has local multiplayer modes.
It's like they go "Oh yeah you guys have wanted online in monster hunter for a while now right?"...."Downside is were making you pay for it! suck on that!"
