Back when Nintendo and Sony were friendly, they worked together on a certain console called the Play Station. This console was supposed to be able to play Super Nintendo and Play Station games. Sounds neat, right? I still wonder what might have happened if Nintendo actually went ahead with Sony and put this out.

A website called Game-Rave.com has put up what it says are prototype images of the Sony PlayStation/Super Famicom. That was the CD-based console Nintendo and Sony planned to collaborate on. According to the console database, this system was intended to play both Super Famicom games and Playstation games, albeit a different breed of PlayStation than what we know today. This was found via the lost levels forums, and sure is covered with watermarks.

From what I can see trying to ignore the ridiculous watermarks, it looks like a very primitive Xbox.

This isn't exactly a secret. Nintendo and Sony had a deal, Nintendo decided to break the contract and retain full rights to the games published on their systems, and then went with Phillips and their failed CD-I system instead.

Well most Nintendo buffs already knew about the deal with Sony, but now we get to see what may have come into being had things not fallen through. Assuming any of this is even real. :\

Imagine a parallel universe where this became a reality though.

That would have been an interesting console to play, and would have made the gaming market pretty different to what it is right now. Don't like the look of the console itself though really.

It probably would have gone the way of Sega CD; me and about 1000 others would have played it for a while and then nobody would remember that it existed,

It would have been cool for a while and then newer stuff would come and take over

It would be tight to be able to play Playstation games and Super Nintendo games on one console. I would probably get one for fun it they actually made it.

As far as I know, it wouldn't have the same "power" if they left the older version on the market. It would be much more 'primitive' in a way.

Actually, the reason Nintendo backed out was because Sony had full control over the disc format of the the console, meaning they would publish any games made on CD. Nintendo retained the cartridge aspect, but it was obvious that no one would develop games for cartridges when CD format was ready and available.

Looks like a good system, but isn't it a bit big? I mean the Xbox is a box, no doubt, but the Super Playstation just looks like an overgrown PSX. I wouldn't buy it, but I bet some of the games are good.

How could there be good games on a console that was never released.

I disagree. I believe Sony are selfish for their contract demands were huge. But I also believe Nintendo made idiots out of themselves by not thinking the contract through before hand.

It was a joke...hence the " " face at the end of it...

Yeah, and releasing this console also gave Sony the rights to Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. When Yamauchi realized this, he broke ties right away.

Sony isn't selfish, so Nintendo isn't either, but Sony having control of alsmost all the project isn't nice...

It's not the companies who are selfish, it's the people behind them. It's in our nature.

They would destroy each other if there was a legal way to do so.

Read about this on Wikipedia. They made several of those consoles and then suddenly stopped. It would have been a huge success. Soon after Sony released it's new PlayStation but it no longer had the SNES compatibility.

It seems like a good invention, but it has too many similarities with other consoles, like X-box.
