If its one thing Borderlands is known for, its ridiculous amount of weapons. The weapon count seems to keep getting bigger and bigger and the game still hasn't released. So far the game has a set count of 3,166,880. That's still not enough I say!

The debug menu was fascinating, though, as it's basically a giant database of all the possible combinations of guns you can have, from sniper rifles with shock damage and a blue scope to uzis with flame effects and a red barrel. For each category the total number of possible guns was listed and, at the top, was the total number of guns that could be created with all the possible combinations.

That number was 3,166,880.

I'm kinda worried this game is going to sell itself on the amount of *bleep*ing weapons it has, with many people ignoring the fact it won't actually be that good (much like Fallout 3 and its supposed 100+ endings).

Just a thought. Could be coolest game in a decade.

True, but I do like the new cell shading style. It makes the game stand out more and has grabbed my attention more then before.

That's the idea. I have mixed feelings about it. Maybe like the guns it will rely on that for sales (i.e. 3 million guns + cel-shading = PROFIT!!!). Mostly I just hate the *bleep*ing anorexic characters.

    Number of weapons = 3,166,880
Number of weapons that are significantly different from each other = Maybe, maybe a few hundred or a thousand at the very, very most.

I'm extremely skeptical of this game and it's arsenal of weapons. I'll believe it when I see it.

You should read the details -- it's inaccurate, really..as I understand it there's a large amount of base weapons and then tons and tons of modifications/combinations for each. This is why I'm wary of the game, it seems like they're purposely misconstruing things for sales.

I'm guessing all of the varieties of weapons is based on every individual aspect of the guns.

For example, there might be 6 parts to a flamethrower and 4 parts to a pistol, those can be put in any combination to form different weapons. So yeah, probably not more than 500 "types" of guns; but gamers go apeshit over customization.

    Number of weapons available: 3,166,880
Number of weapons that people are actually going to use: 10-20

Even if it is just going to be different weapon attachments that make it seem like they're different weapons, somebody's going to come up with a setup that's going to completely dominate and everybody's going to copy it. Nobody's going to try out every single weapon possible in this game.

Great point -- does seem rather extraneous.

I don't understand how this is possible. So what, we get weapons with different abilities and it just randomly combines those?

I usually don't like modifying weapons. It just feels like the creators are saying "We couldn't be bothered to create a few, well made and balanced weapons, so we're letting you figure it out yourself instead."

Honestly though, too much choice in a game is a bad thing in my opinion.

Disagree. In some games, I definitely agree. Even then, slight modifications for preference are nice. Call of Duty was a good example of that. Very limited customization, but enough to make just differences. In almost any RPG game, however, I can never have 'too much' customization. I think game developers should create a few well balanced, decent weapons, and I think we should be able to break them down and rearrange.

Well, I did say that I "usually" do not like it. It is good and well when done in moderation, but not when the creators intended for the players to basically create the weapons themselves. And I agree, CoD is a very good example of when it's done the right way.

    They have too many weapons. ;-;

    Probably something gay like.

    "Speed 1-10"
"Power 1-10" and so on. Even if you have the same gun and the only way it differs is it's power is 9 instead of 8 it's classed as a different gun...

I think this game is going to be pretty ace. I love the idea of weapon collecting, it's what made Phantasy Star Online fun, and part of what made Diablo II fun as well.

Still, it's clear that there isn't really going to be that many weapons, just different stat variations and add-ons.

Ok folks , here is what they mean by 3,166,880 waeapons. Take this from a long-time gamer, and big fan of this particular game.

It means there are 3,166,880 possible variations of the weapons. So it will break down to something like this:

Each weapon will have a base model, and will have a mod slot, and an ammo slot.

Base model could be something like: shotgun , assault rifle, pistol (there will be more, but for example.) Mod slot could be silencer, barellel extension, laser pointer (for example.) Ammo slot could be poison ammo, hollowpoint ammor, super hollowpoint ammo.

Just out of these parts, that equals 27 possible 'different' weapons (3x3x3=27). If there was another 2 kinds of ammo, say explosive ammo and shocking ammo, that would mean there is now 45 different weapons. (3x3x5=45)

What I'm trying to say is don't buy into the whole 3 million plus weapons thing. It is really cool, and there will be that many possible different varieties of weapons ,but they aren't all going to be vastly different.

If you take randomized stats into affect, you could say Diablo one had over a million weapons in it.

    Long live randomization in games.

That is probably the best put explanation i've seen of how it will likely work. But you didn't mention that there are supposedly manufacturer's taken into consideration as well. which means before or after it decides what "base model" it is it has to choose a manufacturer for it appearance (for example they talked about one manufacter used wooden stocks or something), if there are a few different looking shotguns, assault rifles, pistols appearances per manufacturer ( let alone broken into parts like they are trying to make it sound ) that alone adds alot more diversity than i have seen in a shooter. they are probably overhyping it with the 3 million or anywhere near that mark but does it really take that much to be impressed by the number of weapons? what other shooter comes close to that claim? Guess the only way to know is to see it.

Number of significantly different weapons (a pistol that's slightly more powerful than another pistol isn't a significantly different weapon) - 20
    Number of add-ons/customizations - 3 or so, per weapon-type
    Number of ammo-types - 3 or so, per weapon-type
    Number of colours - 1,000,000

I hate this kind of bullshit advertising.
