Not happy with the recent price rise in games to £50? Well your wallet could take more of a battering with games costing up to £70. Sony's former European executive says games should rise in price to meet the costs of production these days. So down the line gaming could become a quite expensive hobby.

Sony’s former European President thinks the average cost of a blockbuster videogame should rise to £70 ($115/€82).

Only a price jump would ensure a continued supply of groundbreaking games, according to Chris Deering, who noted the huge increase in development costs in recent years.

“In order to price these games at a level where they would support an industry [as strongly as] they did ten years ago, they’d have to be sold at £70”, Deering told MCV, a games trade website.

He was speaking to the games trade website in response to this month's decision by Activision to raise the recommended retail price of Modern Warfare 2 from £45 to £55. The publisher blamed a weak pound as well as record development costs.

But getting UK gamers to pay higher price tags for blockbuster titles will be very difficult: a psychological glass ceiling dictates how much consumers are willing to pay for top-ranking titles, Deering says.

“The cost of development is ten times what it was for PS2. Yet there are lots of things you can get for less than the relative value of paying 50p an hour for a very high end game."

Oh yes, I do think that the bump in MW2's price is justified! After all, there's always a big chance Activision won't manage to gain profit from a niche little title like MW2, right?...

    I hate that dumb *bleep*

Great way to turn faithful fans into pirates or have them jump ship to Nintendo or Microsoft right there. Who would seriously spend that much on a video game unless it's one they really want?

If the cost of development is that much more expensive, maybe Sony's next console (if there is one) will be more down to earth. They were a bit too ambitious with Blu-Ray on the PS3 to begin with, and now it's really starting to show. As much as I prefer Sony titles over most Microsoft and Nintendo titles (on consoles, not the games they've developed/published themselves), I won't be buying their stuff for quite some time if this happens.

Just a note here, I did not put Sony in the title that was added after for some reason. This man is an EX Sony executive.

    Just saying.

I think someone was just trying to spin some bad press for Sony, especially considering how this guy says this after being booted from the company.

Read: he ain't part of Sony. I'd bet the reason why he's no longer prez is because he wanted games more expensive. So seeing as how he's an EX prez, his views don't reflect Sony's.

EDIT: edited to take the intensity out...

Oh yeah, I think video games are expensive enough already, but doubling the prices? Man, such a good business move to promote sales.

    You've done it again, Sony.

Holy crap so that price is double the price of games in the UK.Holy crap, if they did that in Aus, that would mean games would be $200-$240.

What a load of rubbish, just a way of trying to rip more money out of the consumer.

GTA IV, which had huge production costs, made over $500 million revenue in it's first week alone. Granted, not every game is going to sell like GTA, but some - like MW2 - have no need to have inflated price-tags, as they're still making a huge profit.

They do know there main target consumer's are kids and teenagers?

Most of which don't have £70 to spend everytime a game they want comes out.

I highly doubt it. You can't get blood from a turnip. With the ever increasing market for used games, added extra cash to new releases wouldn't solve the problem.

If anything they're going to have the change the dynamic of game play. More pay-per-content would be a logical solution. Map packs, extra levels, new characters, new items, etc. for a nominal fee would add the extra profits at minimal production costs and also tap into previously stated used games markets. This would extend the perceived value of the game much more than just slapping on a higher price tag.

      Play ISDF Aug 1, 09
The only problem there is when it becomes near forced to play online, or even just play in general. Take Halo 3 for example, at this point for the vast majority of playlists, you require either all the DLC or Non-Cold Storage DLC. There are only about 3 playlists there that require no DLC, out of something like 30. It's only like Lone Wolves, one of the Team Battles and some other one that I can't remember. As I recall, the Heroic map pack used to be like 600 Microsoft points and the Mythic 800, I'm probably wrong however but it was something like that. For a person who plays Halo 3 to death, then sure that's a great deal. But for the casual player, or even just the casual online player, it ends up being a somewhat horrible deal, partly due to how much the Microsoft points actually cost to buy.

Pay-per-content isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it must be within some reason. If it becomes a main source of revenue, more than a game itself, then near forced DLC will become more common and the consumer is easily going to start getting ripped off. While a fair idea, there are some obvious drawbacks.

      Just my opinion.

It's an interesting point. If the company makes the concept too obvious or seeming to be a rip off (Capcom springs to mind) then the backlash is going to be similar to simply hiking the core price up.

You know what? We should just make every article have ridiculous and over the top titles, no matter how sane the article, just for the laughs. I'm not saying this one has an over the top title but if people are taking it like this now imagine the potential stupidity and hilarity that could be unleashed.

    lolno.

A price jump like that is only going to turn potential customers away and cause profits to drop, which is hardly going to encourage developers to invest so much into their games. MW2's already stirred up a lot of opposition to its pricing structure, and we've already been hit with a general increase from last gen.

I have two thoughts on this:

1- THEY are making the budgets bigger for games, not the gamers.

2- Let the free market decide. If they want to try to sell games for 70 pounds then go for it. People will pay what they feel is fair. (Personally I would never pay that much, and I think they would make more selling more copies at 50 than less copies at 70, but hey)

I believe Valve talked about this idea not too long ago, I definitely agree; buying a game at full price now is swallowing one hell of a pill. I work full time and get paid a decent amount, but money is extremely tight these days, I've been playing the bargain bin for the past few months.

I think retailers are starting to see the point though, Gamestop has been having a few great deals as of late, Oblivion GOTY for $20 last week and now Street Fighter 4 for $20 this week? If I don't get that I'll probably kick myself.

I kind of hope they release something for a hundred quid and it sells like a thousand copies. That would be most entertaining as they scrambled to add value to the game with freebies, or just slashed prices frantically.
