At this point, the Wii has already sold over 7 million consoles worldwide since it's launch in Q4 2006. The worldwide total for the Xbox 360 is around 11 million, while the worldwide total for the Playstation 3 is a little over 3.5 million.

Now, IDC research firm is saying that they expect Nintendo to sell through 16 million Wii's worldwide in 2007. That is a pretty staggering number when you compare it to the total sales of the Gamecube, which only sold about 22 million throughout it's entire lifespan.

Nintendo will sell almost 16.1 million consoles in 2007, about 60 percent more than the 9.87 million estimated for PlayStation 3 and 9.69 million for Xbox 360, according to estimates by IDC, a research firm in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The motion control of the Wii, introduced in November, makes it easy for new players to use, Nintendo spokeswoman Beth Llewelyn said. ``Nintendo has enjoyed tremendous success by going after new types of gamers,'' she said.

16 million in one year? That would be a great accomplishment if Nintendo can pull it off I would think. That's just a little more than half to go.

That sure is a large milestone to be aiming for, but I am confident that Nintendo can achieve it if they keep selling Wii consoles like they are now. Good luck to them.

I bet they can. As said by Rinky, if they sell them like now, they can.
BUT, there's still demand, but I bet they can =).

I think they will be able to but thats a high point to aim for 16 million is a lot.

16 million? That's quite a lot. I wonder if they are even able to pull it off.

Smash Bros. was a system seller for GC, I'm sure it will have much the same effect on Wii, especially with the other games, first and third party, coming out in the near future.

I don't think the goal is unrealistic at all. They've already sold over 7 million Wiis (around 7.5 mill) and we're only in June. We still have a little less then 7 months to go before the year is finished. And don't forget, console sales are at it's highest around the holidays. I expect the total to rise considerably in Q4 2007.

It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can sell 16 million Wiis this year. 16 million is a lot but since they've already sold over 7 million Wiis it might just be possible. Well goodluck to Nintendo on their goal!

Nintendo would be rolling around in money unlike Microsoft and Sony who lose money on every console sold. Anyway selling 16 million would be quite a feat and put them on top which is where they deserve to be.Goodluck to nintendo who I have always supported.(even though I had a ps2 instead of a GC)

Those numbers seem to be alright, imo. I have a few friends who's getting the Wii with me by the time SSBB is released, so there's about...6 more Wii's sold.

This seems possible; the Wii's are popular now, so I think they will sell out well by the end of this year. Over 7 million Wii's have been sold, and we aren't halfway through the year yet, so 16 million is a good goal. If they don't accomplish it, it's probably only going to be by just a couple hundred thousands.

It would be great for them to reach that goal. It is a lot, but the way the Wii has been flying off the shelves, it is reachable imo. Plus with their bigger, more anticipated games coming out, they should have a boost in sales.

Of course this goal is obtainable. Nintendo is a classic after all. Im still shocked as to how theie goal is estimated to be at a much higher selling rate than the Playstation 3 or X-Box 360.

The Super Smash Bros Brawl will probably be the reason for the Wii's massive sales though.
