Yamauchi has revealed how Gran Turismo for the PSP interacts with Gran Turismo 5. He said unlocking cars in the PSP version will also unlock them in GT5. Also the PSP version does contribute to the longer wait for GT5.

It’s not unreasonably pessimistic to say that just because a caris in Gran Turismo PSP, it may not be in Gran Turismo 5. It’s been debated in our forums at length, and we won’t have a definitive answer until we can directly compare the car listfrom each game. However, things look a bit brighter when you consider this recent interview with Kazunori Yamauchi by French gaming site JVN. When asked about the “interactivity” between GT PSP and GT5, he responds:

    Handheld GT was a great idea, I love the game.

    And that's really convenient, gives me more reason to play GT5 because I won't have to start out by winning a number of races in a slow, unenjoyable car.

      As with anything Polyphony related a 4 year delay is about right.

    Well I don't own a PSP, nor do I plan to own one, so I guess I'm screwed for the unlockable cars.
