John Carmack, the head honcho at id Software has let out his opinion on the next generation of consoles. He believes that Sony will take the opportunity to release the PS4 first and that at least one console will use Digital Distrubution as main format mode to game.

id Software John Carmack is hopeful the current cycle of console hardware is made to last, so that developers can leverage their tech for as long as posible. That said, if the next round of the console wars is to arrive sooner rather than later, Carmack believes it is most likely that Sony will want to be the first of the console giants to introduce new hardware.

Personally I care as the second it is announced I will be heading on down to my local games store to pre-order the thing. Though I personally enjoy the build up to the consoles more at times than the systems and the games they produce. The whole year long back and forth bitch fight between brands throwing hardware specs at each other. I just enjoy that spectacle especially if they unveil their consoles at the same E3, to me that doesn't get more fun. Though I know that regardless of when they release these things I will buy them all on day one.

Considering Sony are mostly behind now because they launched late, I'd say this is a fair guess.

Well still Ps3 has 10 year cycle so we might see PS4 in 2016

The PS3's life cycle has nothing to do with when the next console comes out. Sony runs their old consoles alongside their new ones.

I'd be shocked if they waited that long. They probably just said so that people would think paying over 500 bucks for console was a good idea at the time.

      PS4 in 2012 I'd wager.

      *IMHO**

yet the PS3 will still be kickin' for it's 10-year life cycle. Take note of the PS2. It has a 10-year life also . . . yet the PS3 was released, like Bale Fire said, while the PS2 was still around, kickin', and full of support!

If any console is going to use Digital Distribution it's going to be the next Xbox, i can see it having a huge harddrive, much bigger than anything the PS3 has at the moment, so we can all either buy our games from the marketplace on the Xbox or we can buy them from the store and rip them to our console.

Thing is DD may be viable from a HDD perspective as even now I can buy a cool 1Tb HDD for just over £60. Think forward to 2012 and we could be seeing as much as 64Tb or 128Tb HDD's for close to the same price. Even if games become 25Gb+ as standard that HDD size is as good as infinite as many people will never buy enough games to fill it.

The issue is ISP's just don't offer connections fast enough, we have all had it downloading a demo on the Playstation Network or Xbox Live that is 2Gb or something stupid that often takes 2-3 hours. Does anyone wanna wait over a day for a game that is 25Gb? Japan and places like Sweden are fine their average connection is over 100Mb/s though the UK and mainland America it's about 4Mb/s and it's not going to get any faster anytime soon.

First, the HDD doesn't matter too much. The PS3 can use any size HDD (2.5" form factor).

Second, why would you think Microsoft would go for DD first and foremost? Are you forgetting that Sony already is doing that with their PSPGo? Whose to say they wouldn't do it for their console too?

Third, Like Daweii said. The current state of the internet wouldn't make it feasible for DD of games. Think of current gen game sizes. Think of the PS3 games sizes since a lot of people talk about the size of those in terms of BD room and all that. Games will become bigger than they are this gen. Try downloading a game this gen and wow you'd probably be at it at LEASE a day . . .

Lastly, I still think the majority of people still prefer to have a disc to hold in their hands. I know I do.

But you know, in the end, I somewhat do think that MS will do a lot of DD. Just not mandatory though. That's because they seem to have the fanbase for it. I personally wouldn't really like it unless I can have some sort of voucher for a disc too!

Why do i think that MS will do DD first?

Because they already are doing DD right now, it's called Games on Demand and was implemented in an Xbox Live update yesterday.

Yeah but that's not really DD as a main media for games. The closest one that I see this gen is the PSPGo (which is why I had mentioned it before)

If a game system goes to DD the games better be 50% cheaper..

      Daweii Aug 12, 09
They most likely won't be. Even though the developer saves on printing and boxes they don't offset that on the price. I mean Steam has been doing DD on PC for over 5 years now and their games are often more expensive than the same game in a box ordered online. Yes the prices do drop quite fast but most are exactly the same price as the retail version on shelves.

No Daweii, most games on steam are cheaper than in store. I know this for a fact.

I got Orange box on steam for £5, I got CSS for £12 while in the game store the day before I saw it for £20.

There is a discount on steam, its just that retailers threaten to order less if there is too much of a steep discount on DD.

Most games are the same price brand new. Yeah you do get some good deals most notably on Valve games, but most games brand new cost the same on Steam as they do on say Play or in GAME. The store on Steam does lower prices as I did say they do drop their prices quite fast which after say 4-5 months you can get some of the hottest titles for under £15, but starting the games from my experience on Steam are the same price when they are brand new releases.

You clearly don't live in Aus If the prices I saw are correct, it's cheaper to go to the store and purchase your 360 games. The older ones at least.

I have owned the PS1/2/3 but if the PS4 were DL only, I would not buy one.Just like I won't buy the PSP GO.

That's honestly how I feel. There better be some life-saving features beside gaming on that console for me to buy it---and it had better be VERY cheap! That's why I'd consider the PSPGo, depending on features and all, and ONLY after a drop in price of at least $100!

All I know is that when the PS4 is finally released, whenever it is, it better be backed with appropriate games to show off its abilities. One gripe I had with when the PS3 was released was the lack of games available for it. If they're really planning on releasing first and being revolutionary, they need at least 4 or 5 games that truly showcase this.

Really looking back none of the current gen consoles had games to show off the power. I mean yes the Xbox 360 had Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3 but those games now look super dated. No console launches with AAA content that comes within the first 2 years of the consoles life. From there you would be expecting a few AA titles every year until the console is replaced.
