The quality of Sonic games recently has been extremely inconsistent and has drawn out some responses from Sonic fans. So what does Sega think of this? They've acknowledged that it's pretty much impossible to please everybody with just a single Sonic game. They've divided the market into people who have grown up with Sonic and people who are growing up right now; if you're in the former category, you might be slightly disappointed to hear that Sega's focus is on the latter group.

As Sega targets 12-and-under gamers as its core Sonic market, company leaders told Kotaku that it has re-thought how to please all Sonic fans.

To understand how Sega thinks about its most famous mascot, one must appreciate how differently people responded to 2008's werewolf version of Sonic, the Werehog.

That creature, who was playable in the combat sections of last year's Sonic Unleashed, "came in for so much criticism," Sega of America's vice president of market, Sean Ratcliffe recalled for Kotaku during an interview with Sega execs in New York earlier this week. "If you read all those things, and we do — maybe not quite every single one, but the vast majority of them — and it's amazing the sort of diatribes you get. But if you sit down with a group of 8, 9, 10 year-old boys, completely different story."

You can't please them all, Sega has learned.

"If you read everything, we need to be all things to all gamers with Sonic, and that's a difficult thing to do," said Mike Hayes, the head of Sega Europe and, as of last month, the head of Sega of America as well. "Trying to put everything into one game and making everybody happy is impossible. And I think that's something clear going forward."

So as Sega proceeds to, in Hayes' words, "review our Sonic road map," fans young and old should prepare for an approach that will produce Sonic games that won't satisfy everyone at once.

It's impossible to please everyone in any group with anything -- I thought this was common knowledge.

All they need to do is take all the classic Sonic gameplay and mix it with modern tech, like Capcom did with Street Fighter IV. This will please most fans (as that game did), and will make a lot of money (ditto).

The thing about stupid people who play shitty Sonic games (or consume shitty anything) is they don't know good from bad (i.e. bad is good, good is good) -- so just make something good.

      ...I got owned.

      To the article itself;
I am a huge fan of the character not the game so I never really minded about the game, I knew what I was gonna get when I chose this path, I go around responding "Sonic" to Favorite characters and shit, Most then reply with "Your a dumbass a dumbass", "He sux, n00b", "Lol he's bullshit now.", "Mario*insert many greaterthans here*Sonic.", "Lol WTF are you doing? Your making a fool out of yourself blah blah blah *speech that shows he/she's right which no matter how much I want to yell "Shut up!" and "You're wrong!" or just run away and cry, I can't deny that it's true.* and just insult me further when I stand up and can't take it anymore, The rest agree with me just because they don't want to upset me....Thus my total life has turned into complete bullshit.

I get flamed by haters and Mario lovers whenever I bring the subject on the internet, Fan characters (The plague of the fan hood database) walk around free and just make it worse from the inside completely unaware that they embarrass themselves and the series themselves, Leaving me to put my hand on my head take a breather and sob for a bit every time becoming more open to the fact that this inevitable.

IRL on the other hand my reward for defending him is becoming the laughing stock of the school who got beaten up, has no friends, is mentally retarded and the coward. (Who's enemies run away the moment I approach them which them implies "Several people who I don't even know and are older than me against me". "Me" as in me alone, me the fragile kid, me the crybaby with no friends.) and now it's going to haunt me for the rest of my life.

No one understands, not even my own mother, One morning she approached me about my life at school, I was reluctant to say but I thought "This is my mother, I know she'll understand..." so I told her everything, then she just started yelling saying I'm insane and how this issue will bring shame to herself, This issue that concerns her in no way, This issue that I decided to with full awareness of what will happen, This issue that brings me nothing but trouble and will haunt me till until I rest in my grave, Then she started going off topic and not even making sense to me, That moment something broke inside me, I burst into tears as she said she can't take this and brought out a leather belt, I endured every hit and I cried and cried...

But in the end, ...I'm happy...when all the bad's said and done, after the tears stop flowing, after my skin stops hurting...I remember the reason I did this in the first place...and a smile lights my face, and I feel more determined about this than ever...

(Oh and I bet a lot of you will come and say I'm stupid, well that's ok. If you aren't thanks for taking a little while to hear my story out...)

Anyway enough of my emotions, If you want to keep this thing going SEGA, You're going to have to appeal not to the little fans left, but to the majority of the world, you could always then make a game for the little kids on the side, But take the whole world into priority first.

But isn't that like saying. You grew up on Sonic when he was good so we are going to keep doing it badly so children growing up can be plagued with terrible Sonic games for eternity. If thats the case just buy that Sega Genesis collection, get all the good Sonic games and call it quits.

Sell him for *bleep*loads of cash to Ninty. Let them make arcade games for the fella on Wiiware and get fans to demand shite off of them.

You can't please an entire fanbase at once? What a shocking revelation!

Why do they even continue with Sonic if their going to just destroy what he really is. Frankly I think that if they want to release a Sonic for the PS3 like they have done recently, make it just like some of the older side scrolling games ( the best games ) but just greatly improve the graphics and make the levels longer. Hell, and if they wanted to get tricky, they can add other things into the game like a Chao Garden or a story line. But a fighting Werewolf..? Egh

Though it's a rhetorical question, the answer lies in the article. With their shift towards a new generation of gamers, a game like Sonic Unleashed could actually be considered successful (by Sega's standards) since apparently the kids liked it and that's what seems to count for Sega now.

You do forget, though that it's in for the money. They would want to keep continuing including pleasing fans, which fails. You can't please the whole world with just one game.

Or how about a classic story? *bleep* these magic jewels and werewolves. Robotnik captures animals and wants to take over the world. Sonic has to stop him. Simple.

Hey though, look at Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Now that wasn't necessarily the best game ever, but I thought it wasn't half bad. And ok Mclubbin, sure I see exactly the point. But at the same time, the younger kids of this generation ( 8-10 year olds) may not have had the chance to play the classic games like we did. I think honestly, that no matter what kids that young will buy a game by looking at the cover of a game case. They should try sticking classic and just see what happens, they jumped from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Riders, and it went all downhill from there.

Flippy, I would quote you but I'd be screamed at for swallowing the comments page.

Anyways you remember Blaze from the Black Knight Forums? She was my sister. I still have a soft spot for the fella too but it's the games that get crapper. So many games are getting expensive and it gets to the point where fans can't keep up and ditch their faith in it.

If you seriously like Sonic that much, keep at it.
