Looks like Sony is going to match Microsoft's price drop on the Elite. Cheap Ass Gamer forum member Oswald9599 found this flyer at FYE, due to come out after next week's big convention.

As you can see, no PS3 Slim as highly expected. However keep your fingers crossed Slim hopefuls, Sony might be keeping that as their big secret.

CAG Oswald9599 provides the scoop with this photo of future signage at FYE. The sign reveals a PS3 80GB console for $299.99 and a 120GB console with Uncharted for $399.99.

While the exact date of the price drop is unknown, we are told these signs will be put up in the next "planner period" which is usually the last or first Thursday of the month.

Woah...that's a major drop. I mean, I know that the PS3's production costs have gotten cheaper, but damn that's a big dip down.

Sucks for all the people who are going to buy it this week.

Now I am tempted to buy a PS3, have to see if the drop is as dramatic in the UK as it is in US.

      $299 = £180. Very interesting.

I bought my PS3 the week before it dropped from $600 to $500. I was friggin pissed. I just returned it and then bought a new one in the same store. They were like, "HAI WAIT A MINUTE," but still let me do it.

    THANK GOD.

Getting a PS3 now. Interesting it's the same price as a 360 and a Wii.

Definitely keep an eye out for Best Buy, there's a good chance their Killzone/Metal Gear bundle will be $299 as well.

What store is the flyer from? It could just be a store exclusive deal.

I still won't consider it until a slim version comes out -- that thing is *bleep*ing hideous.

      Wow. You fail.

It looks way better than the 360. It doesn't have a huge ugly ass power brick hanging out its back end.

Wow so a ugly ass black brick looks better than a slim and very polished white console?

Seriously your so goddamn jaded by your fanboyism.

I was gonna be buying a PS3 for christmas anyway, this just means i'll save some money.

Slim and polished? It looks like a maxi pad, it has a huge goddamn power brick hanging out its ass, and it makes SO MUCH FACKING NOISE whirring the discs around in there.

Let's just agree they're both ugly as sin (because lets face it, they are) and not feed the troll any more; we all know he's a fanboy who really won't listen to anything that isn't proclaiming Sony as gods.

I can tell you from experience that a Maxi pad and Xbox 360 do not look alike, unless perhaps they added adhesive wings to the console?

And I never batted an eyelash at the power brick, as I grew used to laptops way before I got my 360. I'm not sure why everyone complains about that, to be honest; guess it comes down to preference, and which console you find more attractive -- or less ugly. Hm, come to think of it, I don't think there's a single console I find remotely "sleek and polished," even before the 360 and PS3.

I don't care about looks, but I must say the ps3 looks tons better than the xbox 360. No contest

First of all rewind. Has the slim even been announced? If so then I was left out of the loop.

        Second of all, pre.fer.ence.
        Preference. Learn it Kave.

Then again this should have been said long ago. No one feed the troll. It will go away if we ignore it long enough. It's sight is based on replying. So do not reply to the troll and in time our problem will be solved.

Eh, it's to be expected of Kave. In the short time he's been here, he's already established himself as a massive PS3 fanboy.

And I think most everyone has already accepted the Slim's existence. I'm predicting an announcement at GamesCon this coming week. I wanna see the real thing, not a bunch of mock-ups.

The 40GB has always been $399 though, so either they haven't updated it yet, or this is just another stupid attempt to stir up rumors.
    • 0
      dmf_dynasty Aug 15, 09
It wouldn't update yet. That's a leaked flyer and, according to the article, it won't be legit until it's announced at GamesCon next week.

        Red 9 Aug 16, 09
Well let's hope so; even though I've already got a 60GB (luckily), the Slim model can only help Sony in the tough times to come.

    PS2 compatibility please, Sony.

      FinalFantasyFanaticc Aug 16, 09
Damn right, i hate how the models nowadays are only compatible with a few games, i really wish they'd make it so all models can play EVERY PS2 and PS game =|

      BRING BACK 60GB's!

The thing is though I think they could have put BC back into commission, if they didn't have a price-drop. Doing both would screw them over and since people were bitching more about a price drop we were given that, so in some time when they can afford it it'll probably come back into new models... maybe.

*bleep*ing sucks though. I can't find one game of this generation that even stands up to some of the best on PS2

          Smoke Aug 16, 09
They've patented a way for the PS3 to emulate PS2 with software, so we may see it in the near future.

As for making money off of that? Perhaps downloading full PS2 games through the PSN.
        • 0
          Hideo1* Aug 16, 09
I reckon full PS2 games downloaded off the PSN would utterly destroy HD space though. Could work but with people struggling these days to have space with installs and general PSN games I think full PS2 downloadable ones would be too much.

          Smoke Aug 16, 09
Aye, which could show why they're focusing on the 80 gig and 160 gig? Xbox does it with 360 games, PS3 could easily do it.
        • 1
          dwg14390 Aug 16, 09
Yeah but Xbox doesn't require 5gb installations just to play it's games.

That'll eat your harddrive, not including all your other downloads.
        • 0
          Hideo1* Aug 16, 09
Yeah but if it came with the console in the 80 or 160 gig people would just buy PS2 games for cheaper and play straight from disc, whereas if there was something updating current models to emulate it with downloadables it'll be on systems without BC, I.E. mostly 40 gig ones.
      • 0
        Smoke Aug 16, 09
Very true, but it's mostly Capcom doing it. I do admit that my 40 gig hard drive is getting rather full, might upgrade to a 320 soon and use it as a full-media station.

But I definitely do agree, 5 gig installation = lazy developers
        • 2
          Slumpy monkey Aug 16, 09
          Its not lazy at all.
        • 0
          Red 9 Aug 16, 09
Well, when developers like Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games can pull off absolutely stunning games without the requirement for an install, it's obvious that developers who insist on packing in 5GB installs, especially for games that aren't really graphically demanding, are otherwise unwilling to put that effort in.

The only reason MGS4 had so much is because almost all of the data was uncompressed.
        • 2
          Hideo1* Aug 16, 09
But why should a developer be forced to spend the extra time compressing and coding and stuff because the PS3 decided to be more complicated? If they have no incentive too and will just be extra work because they can just make installs anyway, why the hell should they put in that time? It's not lazy; it's business.
        • 0
          Red 9 Aug 16, 09
Because it's in the best interest of the gamers. Developers want to please the gamers, and gamers definitely do not appreciate having to put sizable chunks onto their hard drive to play a game. So really, if it's in the best interest of the gamers to do away with installs, it should definitely be in the best interest of the developers to folow through on that.
        • 2
          Hideo1* Aug 16, 09
Not at all. They only want to please gamers enough to make money. Developers are businesses. If they can still have installs whilst making enough profit to warrant it then they will, regardless of whether it's a small inconvinience to the customer.

In this industry we, as gamers, are the developers' bitches; we pay for what we want and don't pay for what we don't. The devs won't give a flying *bleep* about us as singulars though, because there will always be a large demographic throwing money at them and pointing their arse towards them. Don't get confused about that, we have no power to say what they will and won't do, or at the very least we have no rights to make them listen and as long as they're making money they won't.

It's business, not a super fun time circle jerk. They don't want to make you as happy as is possible, they want your money, and will only go far enough when it comes to pleasing you so that you'll give it to them.

          Welcome to the real world.

I really don't get the "ps3/360 looks ugly" comments. I mean, yeah, they could be more attractive, but are you going to stare at it all day, or play games on it? Ah well, to each his own I guess.

Anyway, good to hear about the price drop.

Nice, a $200 - $300 price drop for the PS3 is a steal! I'd better buy it as soon as possible
