Game Informer recently conducted a survey of 5000 participants to see the hardware failure rates for the current-gen consoles. It'll come as no surprise to see the 360 in the lead with a 54.2% failure rate. The PS3 had 10.6%, while the Wii only had 6.8%. Before fanboys begin to bash the numbers, they've given other statistical information to justify the rates. And remember, the sample size was only 5000. However, the most interesting piece of information from the survey was that only 3.8% of the people who experienced a hardware failure would never buy a 360 again.

The Xbox 360 breaks five times as often as its closest failure-prone competitor, the PlayStation 3, a print edition-only Game Informer survey found.

The poorly manufactured, red ring of death-prone console has a 54.2 percent failure rate, compared to 10.6 percent for the PS3 and the Wii's 6.8 percent.

The magazine surveyed nearly 5,000 readers to get the data. And while the 360's rate is alarmingly higher than the others, it's still bafflingly low because it blows the mind to imagine that 45.8 percent of the consoles have not broken. Also, Microsoft's numbers are inflated because 360s are used the most of the three consoles. Results said 40.3 percent of 360 owners use the console three to five hours a day, compared to 37 percent of PS3 owners. Meanwhile, the plurality of Wii owners (41.4 percent) play their consoles less than an hour a day.

Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent fo Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo.

The most shocking number from the survey — and frightening from a consumer perspective — is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure.

I'm wouldn't be so fast to jump on those numbers, perhaps for the audience they asked... 50% just seems WAY to much. As for the people going back to the 360, it's almost expected of the console. It's become as iconic as the blue screen of death.

Gotta give Microsoft credit though for fixing the system, PS2's disk read error had probably just as bad of a failure rate.

Also surprised at the PS3 and Wii failure rate, I've heard little to nothing about their hardware failures; here and there on the PS3's drive failure... but still.

Well it was only 5,000 people, so its not too crazy to assume half of them had broken 360s.

I'd bet my life savings there's no way in hell the PS2 had as high a failure rate as the 360.

nearly everyone i knew in the ps2 era had their console crap out on them after a couple years. i went through three of them, myself... the 'disc read error' was pretty bad.

Same, and it had a habit of doing it when I got into the best parts of the games I had.

I've had my PS2 since 2001 and I've played it heavily and consistently and never had a single problem.

You know it, my PS2 got it's lenses crapped out, then i switched it for a ridiculous price of more than half of the console's price, then it happened again. Apparently all i needed to do was just open the console and gently clean some dust off it and it works wonderfully again. Only that now my problem is that it at start played things at black-white instead of color, and then it lost sound, and now it's completely dead.

Even if the PS3 or Wii failure rates suddenly spiked above 50 percent, fanboy / console jokes will remain focused on the 360. It made hardware failure famous, regardless of previous consoles' performance issues. I'd like to think how you treat your machine has something to do with it as well...

The only "gaming machine" I've ever had to give up on was... my Dell Inspiron.

you obviously never learnt about percentages in school.

Even if the PS3 sold 2 consoles, and the xbox sold 100. 50% rate of failure is exactly proportional regardless of how many made

I think he is saying though is that because this is from 5000 participants then they have a higher chance of owning a 360 and so on. Unless they all own all 3 and in which case your point stands firmly.

This is exactly where I get confused. If the 360 is for such 'hardkore gamerz' and the like, why arn't they bitching about going a month console-less?

Oh that's right, fanboys stick by their console no matter what.

When I had a 360, the damn thing broke 5 times in 2 years. PS3 is a way better choice for 'hardkore gamerz' because unlike the 360, it actually LASTS LONGER THAN A FEW MONTHS.

I don't hate the 360. I was severely disappointed with it.

HAH, to say you don't hate the 360 is to say Master Chief isn't the lead character of Halo. Both statements no were near true and only a tard would say them.

Maybe because it's worth the wait...? You don't go to an amusement park and then turn back because the lines are too long, you stick around because you know it's worth it.

I highly doubt your 360 broke 5 times in two years anyways. I've had mine for 3 years and it's only broken once. It wasn't even really broken, just froze up on me sometimes, so I forced the RRoD and got it repaired for free. And it didn't take a month either, it took like 2 weeks. You must abuse the thing for it to die 5 times in 2 years.

Nowadays the failure rate has declined greatly. The RRoD is virtually gone, and only a few other rare hardware problems exist.

Because they like the exclusives? I might be naive in this statement, but I had assumed people picked consoles for the games they like being on them.

      Example:
My PSP - Mostly Monster Hunter and if there's some other good games I can get on it, cool. I'm on my second or third PSP, the first was played so much that the paint wore down on the silver siding and the disk tray stopped functioning properly.

360 - Because I like the Bioware titles as well as Chromehounds and most of the multiplats. And as shocking as it may sound, I've never owned any Halo game even though I've owned an original Xbox and a 360. I've borrowed a copy from friends occasionally, but that's it.

I have had my 360 for two years and it has never once faltered on me. It's called good ventilation space, and not placing it on carpet!

    I don't think I've EVER had a console fail on me. =]

...my launch 360 broke RR'd 3 years after I bought it. I paid 15 bucks in shipping and got a new system 4 days later and it's been working fine ever since.

    Go figure?

Reason number 2 why I don't own a 360. Reason number one being price, of course, because I'm a poor Wii player.

My Wii has yet to have any significant problems apart from eating a six year old Gamecube memory card.

      Fury Aug 20, 09
The Arcade model of the Xbox 360 is actually cheaper than the Wii though. And in all honesty, the you're not really going to see any hardware failures on the latest consoles. They've been upgrading the processors to be smaller and more thermal efficient.

Thankfully, I've never had a console crap out on me except for my Gamecube. I got a stupid "disc reading error". >__>
