Looks like Kotaku and several other huge games news sites not only misquoted Todd Howard but stirred up a huge storm regarding the fate of the Elder Scrolls series.
Even if Todd wasn't misquoted and he meant what he said, it still wouldn't have sat right as to why a franchise that pretty much made Bethesda Softworks not only famous for supreme and superb singleplayer RPGs but also has been worked on for the last fifteen years, would suddenly be dropped.
The article also refers to the forever haunting MMO rumour that has been around for the last several years when it came to light that Bethesda Softworks acquired elderscrollsonline.com domain and ever so recently even more domain names relating to a MMO.
Sure it is very easy to believe that Bethesda Softworks could be working on a MMO but if you have any knowledge or acknowledge Beth Soft the slightest then you should know that within the history of the company, they have never worked on a MMO at all. This isn't to say they haven't tried or couldn't do so in the future but bundle this with the fact that "Zenimax Online Studios" exists and are currently working on a MMO, it is safe to say that Bethesda Softworks are not part of this MMO rumour except for bei linked by the media and that they worked on the series.
The Elder Scrolls is very much alive, it is rumoured that seven games are to be made and that was information given back years ago that has been buried by now. They are making the fifth but from the sounds of it, they just need some time before releasing it, after all, Bethesda aren't a company to just sit around all day and they have been in the news a lot recently with many other projects. Just relax, sit back and let the good things come to those who wait.
Apparently some folks got a bit upset by reports based on Todd’s talk at QuakeCon last week. An article came out where Todd was quoted as saying we had no plans for a TES V. He did not say that. That was not a direct quote from him. That was someone’s interpretation of what he said. I know, I was there.
At his QuakeCon talk he was asked when TESV is coming out and Todd replied, “Don’t look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future.” He also went on to say how much the franchise means to us and that it definitely will continue. He just wasn’t going to provide any timeframe on “when.” This should not be news to anyone that has been paying attention. Both Todd and I have said repeatedly that, of course, we’re going to do another Elder Scrolls game. The last one was enormously popular. So was the one before that. You get the idea. So do we.

Honestly, I love the Elder Scrolls series much more than I do Fallout... but I wouldn't be shocked if they stick to Fallout.
Todd Howard and the other spokesmen for Beth Soft have stated that as well. Todd had mentioned they plan to release Fallout 4 within a 3-4 year timeline (which is the general deadline they release their games) and also said there wouldn't be a 10 year wait, this gives them till 2018 to release Fallout 4.
Furthermore, every Fallout game in the future concerns Beth Soft. Even the alledged Fallout MMO that Interplay are (were) working on. Beth Soft bought the rights to Fallout from Interplay because Interplay were struggling for money. Out of respect Beth Soft gave them a project to work on with one condition. That they could put something on the table before a deadline was up.
Interplay so far haven't been able to live up to that deadline and are fighting a bankruptcy battle, whether they have overcome it, I don't know since I haven't been around for several months but that's the last I heard on the subject.
Lastly, just because Beth Soft aren't working on a title doesn't mean they aren't involved with it. Fallout: New Vegas has been given to Obsidian but Beth Soft have the rights and can pull the plug or give the project to someone else.
Fallout has been a big franchise since it came into existence, it lay dormant and it now has the potential to become an even bigger franchise. What we have seen in Fallout 3 is just the mere tip of the iceberg.
I was just going by what I've read about Obsidian (or Black Isle) anyway. If Todd updated Bethblog and you read him say they may or may not release Fallout 4 maybe within 3-40 years with possibilities of it being possible perhaps, then that's good enough for me.
I wonder what changes will be made to the system, and whether it will be released on a console?
I'm quite sure it'll be released on a home console. If it comes out in a year or two, it should be on the PS3 and 360 (and if so, it'd be the last Elder Scrolls for this generation most probably).
One should expect improved graphics (along with less fugly characters). I do hope they add more and varying magical effects both as casted, and on weapons/armor....
With the success on each platform, I can't see why they wouldn't do a multi-release again. Whether Sony are willing to be left out of DLC again is anyones guess
The reason I know Elder Scrolls V was being worked on is due to having a friend that knows of a friend that works for them. He didn't tell me much but what he did tell me was the simple fact that when Fallout 3 was being made, they had a small team starting work on ESV and this was when Oblivion was released and Fallout 3 was announced in 2006.
To clarify, Beth Soft work with the routine of: Develop a game, announce it after the 2 years development, begin development of another game, release the first game and announce the second game, develop a third game, release second game, announce third game and so on.
Beth Soft also have around 3 headquarters, when Oblivion was in development, 1 studio was working on that, the other was working on Fallout 3 and the last was working with Splash Damage on their project
I don't think we'll have much of a long wait for ESV, 2 years at the most from the original target of 2010, certainly not 5 years unless they plan to pump those 5 years full of filling the shelves with the titles they are publishing and helping with
