Just announced during Sony's Gamescom Press Conference, the PS3 Slim will be launched during the 1st week of September for 299 euros, 299 dollars and 29,980 yen.
During today’s Sony GamesCom presser, Kaz Hirai announced the PS3 Slim.
“Today is the day we introduce the PS3 Slim, available in stores from the first week of September,” he said.
It’s 32% smaller, 36% lighter, and sports 34% less power consumption. Inside, there’s a 120gb hard drive.

This does raise my chances of purchasing one. I just hope PS2 compatibility makes a return as well. That'd be the true deciding factor for me.

Also, did anyone find the hard drive bay for this? Looked it over with a friend and we couldn't find one.
Might as well get the Phat model for $299 instead of the slim.
But if it plays my old PS2 games, has a 120GB harddrive and is at least £50 cheaper than a normal PS3, then I suppose it's the best deal.
But still...eh.

And I still can't believe it. The PS3 slim exists. Good lord sony you need to keep your secrets better. It was like half-shock or something rather than blown out surprise. Either way I don't care how it looks, as long as I get to finally play Uncharted and Killzone it can look like the gamecube for all it matters, I just want a cheap PS3.
It stunned. Then we all saw the "Online" part at the end. So yes, it's true -- Sony sucks at keeping worthwhile secrets.
now though i guess normal PS3s will come down in price but im probably not getting this slim one, if you cant play PS2 games on it. just like the new PSPgo which is another epic fail on Sony's part. no one wants to download shit, just pop a game in and play.

So, what's so bad about this? It seems cheap and effective. I mean, backwards compatability would be nice, but the people who don't have a PS2 will be able to downloed PS2 games off PSN soon hopefully.
By the way, this whole 'downloaded games' thing. Don't you see what Sony's doing? They've got the next gen of standard home entertainment secured with Blu Ray. So if they make the jump to downloabable games AND Blu Ray first, what's Microsoft got left? After the Hd-dvd fail, I doubt Microsoft is gonna make another attempt to rival the home entertainment standard next gen.
Just like sony would be happy if MS started heavily pushing blu-ray.

And slim would only please if it was doing what everyone wanted it to do. Be cheaper than all the other PS3s out there. It just seems like a waste.
If sony had either
A) Kept the Price for the fat PS3 the way they where and have Slim PS3
B) Had slim PS3 for 250$ (price of the wii or cheaper)
Then the slim would be useful.
Sure, it's convenient, but come on. A short trip to a game store and get 5 games for £15-£20, or stay at home and pay way more than what a game is worth?

If your answer if yes, then I highly suggest you go purchase a fancy Blu Ray player with a stereo system that looks great and sell your gaming console, because obviously you have no intention of actually playing a GAME.

There's something about matte finishes that just make an item look cheap -- same goes for DSi, you know. Plus side is that you can't scratch or smudge it as easily!

I've deffended Sony tons of times.Quite a few times I've gotten into agruments with 360 fanboys on youtube for deffending the PS3.
But I guess for some (you), we aren't allowed say anything negetive about Sony and just have to blindly like/accept evrything they say/do.The fact is I have a launch PAL PS3 which cost $999 (best $999 I've spent) and except for MAYBE Alan Wake, I have no intention of buying a 360 and I still don't own a Wii.
It's called personal preferrence, look it up.
I've never claimed that Sony was perfect. I think they've made great consoles. I think they're a good company. They have their faults just like Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony's is/was obviously price. Microsoft is its unacceptable high failure rate, and Nintendo's would be appealing to more of a child/casual audience with lack of must have titles and sub-par graphics. Each of the companys are rich for a reason, though.
We can't hurt a PS3's feelings so it doesn't matter one bit why we choose to judge it.
In fact I'm guessing that the majority of people saying it's ugly already own a PS3 so we can judge all we want because highly likely, we won't be buying it.
Then again, that is just my opinion...
People will warm up to it.
This looks horrid. especially compared with the normal PS3.
And it seems I'm not the only one. 360 has a matt finish, but it doesnt look as ugly as this.
If it was a gloss finish it would be fine. Also whats with the text? They should have just used the normal font and engraved that instead.
