SCEA’s director of marketing John Koller gave Sony's reason for not putting backwards compatibility in the PS3 Slim:

“Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3, there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason].”

“And it’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3.”

Well of course people will be buying more PS3 software. Did you honestly think they were going to re-buy all their PS2 games that they already have because you added BC? No, we want BC so we don't need three consoles to play our games.

      Well said.

Though John Koller is not exactly my favorite PR dude.

Last I checked they don't work perfectly and can be a real pain to set up correctly with all the plugins and crap. Two some people don't have a PC that can run them nicely. Three, sure you can connect your PS3 controller to a PC and have it work after some messing around but what it all comes down to is one thing. You shouldn't have to. It's the principle of it all. Especially considering the 360 has it and their trying to compete against it.

I want backward compatibility no matter what! Hate switching consoles from watching blu-ray to playing PS2 games.

Backwards compatibility will always just be a plus in the side for me. Sure it's nice and fun to have, but I buy a new console for the games that are associated with IT and not for the games I happen to have to an older console of the same series. My PS2 works perfectly fine, thank you very much.

Aren't they aware that they have such a huge collection of PS2 games that, by not including BC they are basically shunning those games out of their catalogue? You don't expect a PS2 owner (with a substantial collection) who doesn't have a lot of cash inflow to fork over $299 for a PS3 and not be able to play any of those old games? I mean, one of the biggest upsides the PS2 had at launch was the ability to play PS1 games. And the biggest upside when the PS3 came out, for me, was that I could play all my PS1/PS2 games on one console. Give me convenience or give me death!

But how much extra would it cost if they put BC back? Its not that expensive is it?

well, you still have your ps2, so you could just play your ps2 games on that, even though it would be more convient to play them on your ps3.

when sony dropped BC, they dropped the price $100, so you can assume it costs that much, and you can buy a PS2 for $100, so maybe thats why sony doesn't want to put BC in...atleast untill the PS2 is really dead anyway

So true, save a houndred bucks. And if you despiratly need to beat those PS2 games again for the umpteenth time, use that saved money for a PS2.

        Lol, you own a 60GB.

So they wont add backwards compatibility, because they simply can't? The only reason there is no backwards compatibility, is because they don't think it needs it?

That's *bleep*ing ridiculous. Way to be appreciative of your fans, Sony. 'Yeah, sorry guys, we'd like to help you, but it's apparently not cool for us to. Sorry.'

So now I have to buy a PS2 again, just so I can play games that the PS3 should be able to play. Thanks Sony. Thank you so much.

It would not cost them anymore money to make the PS3 backwards compatible.

Exactly. They just removed it so people would still buy PS2s. I don't intend on buying a PS3, I wanted to play PS2 games so I bought a PS2. I probably would have bought a PS3 if I could still get a BC one...

this is why im buying a broken 60 GB on eBay for cheap, then having Sony repair it for $150 or whatever, and then slapping in a 320 GB 7200 RPM HDD after that.
